An Assasin's Offer 3
Camrey starts to work on the safe houses and helps to plan a job but not everything goes to plan.
She visited 105 Hamley road in the dark. It was a good safe house, not perfect but good. Camrey slipped in via the roof and took a look around inside. The larder was well stocked and the cook was asleep but she didn’t wake him up. The man who monitored the house recorded that there was two assassins there that night and they would be gone in the morning. Camrey took one last look around the place before going home. Next morning she went and saw ?.
"What’s my budget?" she asked him.
"What ever you need." He said.
"Whatever I need."
"Well within reason." He got up. "Why?"
"I Would like to hire some people." She could imagine him raising an eyebrow.
"Why?"
"One for each safe house. They live there take care of the place, file reports for new stuff, repairs…"
"Sounds good."
"And they do their own work in the daytime leaving the house by usual means their payment would be free rent."
"Do it." Camrey left and took off her assassins gear going straight to the fighting ring.
When she entered the apartment of the fighter Pillage the first thing she saw was him flipped out on the couch which served as his bed. She filled a glass of water and poured it over his head.
"Arrgh" he yelped and jumped up.
"Hello to you too." Camrey said and started to negotiate with him…
"So you want me to take care of a safe house?" Pillage asked.
"Yes."
"Why should I?" he asked.
"Free living…" he thought for a second.
"I’m in."
Camrey talked ten other people into taking the job and made them all sign contracts. They were basically: don’t talk or you’ll get killed… reports came in and she signed them sending the amount needed in gold.
The abandoned house was seen to be bought and renovated by builders with bums hanging out of their trousers. Safe house number two became a bed and breakfast with no vacancy and safe house three became a house to help people with deformities. People praised the manager for helping so many people in hoods that hid their supposed birth defects.
Camrey was pleased with all the improvements and having nothing to do one day went to ?.
"You said I could plan difficult jobs." She said being blunt.
"Yes, I did."
"Any I could, say… help out on." She said smiling. He passed her a file.
"You’ll brief spider tomorrow evening."
The target was a government official from the north. Along with the 80, 000 gold pieces and the name it had said to make it public. The official was representing his government at a speech being made by the mayor of the city. Perfect.
The door swung on its deliberately squeaky hinges and Camrey looked up to see spider who was surprised to see her in assassins gear.
"Please sit down." He padded over silently and settled himself in a seat. "Your target is Pellegrino Georgivano he is an official from the north. He will be attending a speech made by the mayor in the fountain square on Monday at twelve o’clock. You will be shooting with a crossbow from here." She looked up from her notes to see he had disappeared. She felt an extra weight on her chair and froze as a fingerless gloved hand descended on her desk. He was leaning over her.
"Where?" he asked in a deep husky voice. Camrey pointed to a building on the map with one finger. "What are my escape routes?"
"You can drop the crossbow in the laundry chute then go down this stairwell or the maintenance stairs if they’re blocked if that’s still not an option well... I’m sure you’ll think of something. After that go to this safe house and you’ll be debriefed. Remember to wear civilian clothes."
"Thanks." He said and she felt him smile at her. He left and she rubbed her eyes, she hadn’t told him that she lived on that floor in that building.
Spider left in dark civilian clothing with a scarf around his head to protect him from the cold. In his backpack he carried a crossbow and one bolt. A good crowd had turned out to hear the mayor speak even though at the moment it was below zero. Spider climbed the stairs and went into the public rest room which was deserted. He locked the door and opened the window. He took aim corrected for the slight breeze and squeezed the trigger.
"Don’t move." A sword point was pointed at the back of his neck and he considered his options.
"Stand up and turn around slowly." He did so placing his hands behind his head. The man was a security guard and his fly was undone so spider assumed that he had been in one of the toilets at the time. He kept his face carefully blank as the man looked him over.
"Take off your scarf." He said and spider frowned.
Suddenly someone fell from the ceiling and knocked the security guard out, he crumpled to the floor and spider put his hands down.
"Get on with it." the person hissed pulling back the hood, it was Shadow. He grabbed the cross bow and stuck it out the window looking for the target. Finding the politician spider corrected for the wind and shot. Screams echoed in the street at the man went down and both assassins fled the washroom running down the hall to the maintenance stairs. Shadow checked the door handle to find it was locked.
"Bugger." Shadow looked around for another exit and spider kicked the door down.
"Shall we?" she smiled before running down the stairs. Once they were outside spider lost her in the sea of people who were fleeing the scene. She was better than he was; he wondered why she hadn’t completed her training and become an assassin like him. There must have been a good reason.
