An Art and Cultural Path in Odessa Ukraine
To those who come to Odessa to spend time on the beach or visit couple of amazing night clubs, I would like to recommend take a little break and check the other side of Odessa at least for a day.
In a historical city like Odessa with a rich past in arts and culture there is no other chance than to come across intriguing and gripping events and artifacts, that represent the past and present of this significantly important Ukrainian city. There are many places we could recommend in Odessa, but there are a few that you shouldn’t miss no matter how much time you have there as a visitor.
The Russian Dramatic Theatre has been a very active theatrical place since the early years of the Soviet Union, always presenting some of the most famous Soviet plays, performed by experienced and talented repertory companies and troupes. Today the Theater maintains and conserves its reputation and keeps producing and presenting wonderful plays to its enormous audience. Plays can be both entertaining and avant-garde as the selection of Russian plays and scripts is unlimited and really diverse. It is a place that really worth visiting and make sure you get your tickets early enough.
The musical comedy Theater is also coming from the previous era and still preserves its good name, although here the plays and shows vary and you can find comedies or touring shows, especially from Russia and Eastern Europe, while the vast majority of rock and musical concerts also take place there, so try to find the program and arrange your tickets because you might find something really interesting. The Philharmonic Orchestra is also one of the best in Europe – we all know that the Soviets had had a great reputation and Odessa proves it.
Of course you cannot miss Odessa’s museums, especially since they happen to feature some of the most impressive collections of the ancient times. No wonder since Odessa has always been a melting pot of civilizations and historical ethnicities that left their mark in the city’s culture and art character. The Museum of Western and Oriental arts is really impressive and you can find an amazing collection of statues, amphora and items of antiquity coming from the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire, as well as the Greek colonies and the Tsars’ Era. It is really worth visiting, but keep in mind you will need some time to go through, as it is big and interesting. The maritime museum is also a place you need to visit if you want to take a look at models and pieces of ships that were sailing the Black Sea and contributed to the Russian and Ukrainian dominance in trade after Catherine’s 2nd era, not to mention that Odessa is still a very important commercial and maritime city.
Art and Culture are two very important themes in Odessa, and if you stroll around the city you will definitely find small galleries and private collections that depict as nothing else the interest of its residents for culture. Its scene is vivid and active, colorful and intense as its past.
Visit Odessa, book hotel or rent Odessa apartments in the center and you would certainly decide to come to this city again very soon.
