Amy Winehouse Rushed to Hospital

Amy Winehouse was admitted to a London hospital over the weekend after reportedly having a bad reaction to a combination of medications she was taking.
The reaction that resulted in Amy Winehouse’s admission to a London hospital appears to have come as a result of prescription medication and not illegal drugs, as was first speculated. The singer has been involved in a complex drug replacement program as part of her drug rehab. It is unclear at this point which replacement drugs were prescribed in an attempt to help Winehouse overcome her addiction to illegal drugs. She has been in some sort of drug rehab program since she was allegedly caught on film smoking crack cocaine in January.

Drug replacement therapy is a somewhat controversial approach to rehabilitation for those who have become addicted to illegal drugs. Addicts are given a cocktail of drugs that will trick the brain’s receptors into believing that they are receiving the illegal drugs that they have become addicted to. As the addict stabilizes their cravings for the illegal drugs, they are slowly weaned off of the replacement drugs, with the idea being that they will be drug-free and able to manage their addictions after the weaning process.

The timing of Winehouse’s hospital visit is curious because it comes only one day after her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, lost an appeal of his sentence of over 2 years for brutally attacking a pub owner in England. He was also convicted of trying to cover up the crime by bribing his victim.
