Amoxicillin is a bacteriolytic broad spectrum penicillin antibiotic that is used for treating bacterial infection that are suspected to be caused by micro-organisms. Availability of amoxicillin is varied and so is the dosage. Tablets are available in 100mg to 400mg formulation and amoxicillin capsules are available in formulation of 250mg to 500mg. While amoxicillin liquid is available in 50ml formulation. Recommended dosage of amoxicillin for cats may vary as per each cat but typical equation of amoxicillin is 5mg to 10mg per pound of the weight of the cat. This dosage must be repeated only after 12 hours to 24 hours. Nevertheless, it is always best to check with the veterinarian before giving amoxicillin.

Side Effects

Antibiotics to humans as well as cats, must only be give when the health condition or disease in not responding to any other drug. As antibiotics are strong and have immediate effect, the dosage for cats must be accurate and with prior consultation with the veterinary doctor. Cases of overdose can result in some severe side effects like vomiting and diarrhea, skin allergies, loss of appetite in cats, fever, chills, palpitation and lack of coordination, etc., could be the side effects of high dosage. These side effects on amoxicillin are seen with oral or liquid amoxicillin.
