About the American Staffordshire Terrier

In the 19th century, dog breeding was still begin developed, when breeders from the Staffordshire region of Great Britain, came up with a breed that was derived from bulldogs and many different terriers. This was the Staffordshire terrier, a powerful masculine dog that got blood thirsty when the property of the master or the master's family or the master himself was threatened. The Staffordshire's brutal reputation was that it had a temperament to fight to death and an angry and cornered one was viewed as a cannon. The fierce temperament of this dog attracted the attention of dog fighting rings in the early 1900's just before dog fighting was banned in the States. Further strains of the breed and a short period of adaptation to the American geography resulted into the formation of a totally different breed, the American Staffordshire terrier, a breed that was a bit bigger than the English Staffordshire terrier.

The American Staffordshire terrier a great personality and temperament. The dog when regarded as a friend and pack member adapts to mild training and becomes a loyal and obedient friend of the master. Note that this is a pack animal and hence, mild discipline lessons in early months do the trick. It is also advisable that one makes the dog well socialized as, if kept away from other dogs the American Staffordshire tends to depict hostile and very violent behavior towards humans as well as other dogs. It must thus not only be social but at the same time it must know who the master is. Long walks, good friendly company and lots of playful happiness keeps the terrier happy. It must be noted that the terrier is also very protective of all kids.
