The bickering between American Idol judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj promises to continue unabated throughout the season. Most who view it think it’s a ploy to garner yet more attention for the already-popular show. But Fox’s reality chief Mike Darnell notes, "People said the passion between the two girls was invented. It’s obviously real. That’s an interesting dynamic that we haven’t seen on one of these shows before." Well, since it is Darnell’s job to make things go nicely for his own show, it’s not really clear that the "passion" isn’t, in fact, invented.
One of the basic tenets of reality television is that very little that happens on it is "real." American Idol actually recruits singers to try out for the show, so any stories you may hear about a good singer just "happening" to give it a go are most likely false. Either way, and whether you believe the fighting is real or not, Idol seems to have a winning formula on its hands with the new lineup.
Next week, the fighting on the show promises to ramp up yet further, as the Idol auditions will be set in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the leaked tape that Idol promises is real (meaning, again, that it most likely isn’t), Charlotte was the scene of the initial verbal brawl between the two judges. Of the new lineup, Darnell notes, "There’s several things that make me relieved more than worried. There’s a new dynamic on our panel that people seem to really like … not to mention we got some really good talent coming. I think we’re going to cut the [ratings] deficit over time."
