Tips on Growing Alyssum Flower

The propagation of the alyssum plant is done through the seeds of the plant. The seeds can be directly sown outdoors in the flower garden, or they may also be sown indoors, onto pots and can be transplanted later. If you want to grow your alyssum plant outdoors, then it is advised to sow the seeds after the soil has started getting warm in the spring. When grown indoors, the plant must be transplanted outdoors post the last frost date. Early spring months are considered ideal for sowing the seeds. While sowing them, it is advisable to keep them 6 - 8 inches apart, so as to give the roots ample space to grow out. Keeping the soil dry until the bloom ensures better growth. Soil should have good drainage and watering should be moderate. The seeds germinate in 7 to 14 days at 65 degrees to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. During dry periods, watering must be done once or twice per week. General purpose fertilizer is good enough for feeding the plant. Dead flowers or leaves must be gotten rid of or at least must be trimmed off. Alyssum flower plants can also be grown in hanging baskets, they give a cascading effect.

The alyssum prefers full to partial sun and partial shade in the afternoon. Once the plant achieves a firm establishment, it will grow well until the first frost. Problems from insects and diseases hardly bother the growth of this plant. However, if any such factors occur, organic or chemical insect repellents and fungicide are good enough to be used for the purpose.

As we can see, nothing special is required for growing the hearty and fairly easy to grow alyssum plant. Fulfill the basic requirements of the plant and enjoy seeing its full bloom and beauty in the spring.
