New Hampshire native John Hobbs, 43, must stay away from Alyson Hannigan, star of How I Met Your Mother, and her entire family. Hobbs doesn’t know Hannigan, but he is apparently obsessed with her and a judge declared that the former psychiatric patient is not allowed to be near the actress and is not allowed to post messages about her online.
Hannigan’s petition for the restraining order noted, "I am in severe fear for my safety and the safety of my family." In one of his posts, Hobbs references taking Hannigan with him to the "after-life". While investigating Hobbs’ bizarre behavior, a New Hampshire police officer noted that he believed that Hobbs was living in an altered state of reality. Hobbs readily admitted that he wanted to meet Hannigan when questioned by the officer. A hearing is set for March 6 to determine if the temporary restraining order will be made permanent.
This is yet another example of the tremendous downside that sometimes comes with being a highly visible public figure. The mentally unstable are unable to distinguish reality from their fantasy world - and famous people are very often drawn into the imaginary realities of the mentally disturbed.
And, unfortunately, the best that Hannigan can do from a legal standpoint is to get a temporary restraining order against a man who has repeatedly made statements threatening her and her family. It’s certain that Hannigan has taken the necessary security precautions to ensure that Hobbs will never get near her, but living with that fear must be extremely difficult.
