Alternatives to College Education

Are you planning to take a break from education after high school? Are you looking for some alternatives which will help you to grow as an individual? Read on to know about some useful alternatives to college education.
After completing high school, not every teenager wants to go to college. Some want to discontinue studies altogether and start working and living independently, while others want to have a gap year, in which they can enjoy, at the same time find themselves and try to understand what they want from life. Whatever might be that the teen wants to do right after high school, it should contribute in some way to his personal growth and development. Here are some good alternatives, which can be considered by high school pass outs.

Community Service
Get involved in community service and do social work. Until high school, a teen just gets to learn and gain knowledge through books and lectures. His experience of the real world is zero. By doing community service, the teen will understand the hard realities of life. He will learn what it is to live an underprivileged life. He will know how to deal with people who are very unlike him, how to sympathize with them and how to bring hope in their life. By doing community service, the teen will know the importance of working hard and taking responsibility in life.

Apprenticeship
Another alternative to college is to learn a trade by working as an apprentice in the business of one's choice. Suppose a teen is interested in joining or opening his own advertising firm in future, he can then work at an advertising agency for one year after high school. This will help in giving the teen a basic idea of how this industry works. In addition to that, he can get the necessary certificates from the company which will help him to get a job in the same field in future.

Military
Joining the military right after high school has many benefits too. A teen can learn a great deal about himself after joining the military. He can learn values such as patriotism by serving the country. At the same time he can earn enough money in the army to fund his college education. Even if he does not want to continue further education, the experience at military will help him in getting good civilian jobs as well, once he has quit from the army.

Travel
If a teen is neither interested in studying further nor in taking up any job, then a good alternative that will help him to effectively spend his time, post high school, is traveling. Taking a break and traveling to new places within one's own country or to other foreign countries will help the teen to meet new people and to learn about new cultures. He will be able to learn about how people belonging to different communities go about their daily business, what mores and cultural values they follow, etc. With globalization taking place and people from many countries working together in organizations now, this knowledge about other communities will help the student in future to work in multi-ethnic groups.

Vocational Training
One of the most useful options is vocational training, in which the teen can learn various trades, such as how to be a make-up artist, carpenter, chef, firefighter, mechanic, etc. A student can get enrolled for a certificate program for the trade of his choice. Once he learns the skills and earns the certificate/license for the same, he can pursue it as a career.

These are a few alternatives which a student can choose to effectively spend and utilize his time after high school. Besides the ones mentioned above, there are many other things or vocations too which a teen can carry on after completion of his school. However, care should be taken that he gets engaged in something that adds to his experience, knowledge and personal growth.
