The ingredients of aloe act upon the lower esophageal sphincter and strengthen it, making it function properly. Secondly, the enzymes, vitamins and sugars in this plant are also helpful in creating proper balance of the digestive system. If acid reflux is caused due to Candida (yeast), aloe vera is equally useful in killing the yeast. As it has anti-inflammatory properties, it is very effective in treating the acidity and regurgitation caused due to acid reflux. On the other hand, it also creates a protective coating around the esophagus which helps in overcoming the discomfort.
Before commencing the treatment with aloe juice, acid reflux should be diagnosed and examined by the doctor. Although it is a natural treatment, the quantity and frequency of aloe vera juice should be taken only by doctor's consultation. It is found in several forms, like in powder form, in the form of pills as well as capsules. But, it is more effective when fresh extract is taken, and for this, one can slice one of the leaves of aloe, remove the extract and drink it in the form of fresh juice. However, people mix it with other apple or grape juice, as simple aloe juice tastes very bad. In order to treat GERD, one should take the aloe vera juice regularly, but, never in excess. Sometimes, one may experience side effects of it like diarrhea.
One should remember that acid reflux can be prevented by having a healthy diet. One should avoid or control the consumption of acidic and greasy foods and coffee. Similarly, if one stops smoking and also reduces the intake of alcohol, he can prevent and even control acid reflux to a greater extent!
