Washing machine with front loading feature (with a frontal port) is wider but less deep than models with an opening on the top (top loading washing machine). A front loading washing machine is relatively smaller in height and is proven to wash clothes much effectively than a top loading washing machine. This difference is due to the inherent design of the two types of washing machine.

First let us see the top loading washing machine. This is the first type of washing machine invented to help the worlds ladies free themselves from the back breaking work. An automatic washing machine will contain both washing feature and drying feature in a single drum, which means that the clothes are loaded from the top and requires no bending of your back. After loading the clothes the machine fills the drum with water and detergent and starts its rotation with periodic shift in the direction of rotation. The clothes are washed based on the concept that the shearing forces between the clothes while washing will clean the clothes and thus the drum keeps rotating with periodic jerks to give maximum cleaning efficiency.

The dirty water is drained out periodically and replaced with fresh water. Thus after about an hour or two of constant churning the clothes are clean enough and all the water is drained out. Next the rinsing activity takes place where the clothes are washed with fresh water twice or thrice to remove the soap and dirt remaining after washing. After rinsing, all the water is drained out and drying takes place. This is done by rotating the drum at high spin levels so that the centrifugal or the outward force will force the water out of the clothes and after few minutes the clothes are dry enough to take them out and directly send it for ironing. This is it with the top loading automatic washing machine.

The only difference with the top loading semi automatic is that there are two drums to do the work of washing and drying. The first bigger drum washes the clothes and the second drum dries the clothes. This can handle more clothes as washing and drying cycles takes place separately.

Now let us see the front loading washing machine. This machine washes clothes using a method called the tumbling method. Here the drum is spun in the horizontal axis and this makes the clothes fall on top of one another and this force cleans the clothes removing the dirt of them. This tumbling force is greater than the shearing force of top loading washing machine and thus clothes are cleaner when washed using the front loading washing machine. But the bending of your body while loading the clothes and while removing the clothes is a major problem in front loading washing machines. Unlike the top loading washing machines front loading always comes as automatic ones where the washing and drying takes place in a single drum and this drum is usually larger and the whole washing machine relatively occupies lesser space than a top loading washing machine.

Nowadays washing machines have come with many added features such as water clogging detection, overload detection, half load washing, silver nano technology to give us a cleaner and pleasant smelling clothes. But the basic feature to look for in all washing machines is whether they have stainless steel drums, require less power and the spin speed of the drums. All the other features are additional. Therefore it is up to you to make a wise decision based on the daily laundry size, the level of dirty clothes and the type of clothes that require washing.
