All about Small Business Marketing

What business owner doesn’t want to expand their business? The simple definition of small business marketing is a plan to grow your business by knowing what your customer’s want and making that accessible to them. There are four basic ways to grow your business: acquiring more customers, persuading each customer to buy more profitable products, up selling each customer by convincing them to buy more expensive products, and simply convincing your customers to buy more products. While each of these ways will increase your profit, some are better than others when it comes to sustainable revenue.

Acquiring more customers is what every business wants to do. Having a larger customer base gives stability to a company in addition to making it more profitable. Marketing can help you gain new customers by attracting people who have never before heard about your product. There are several ways to do this. First, spend some time developing a plan for what you want to accomplish with your marketing campaign, such as a gift shop looking to attract more senior citizen customers. Next, reach out to customers you aren’t currently attracting by offering products that specifically appeal to them or that are useful to them.

Make sure that the products you offer are competitively priced so your marketing doesn’t backfire on you and you get the reputation as "that expensive gift shop". Knowing what your target audience is can really help you in your marketing plans. The gift shop example above will probably never make a lot of sales to male senior citizen customers or young mothers. It would be more productive and cost effective for them to steer their efforts towards middle-aged and upwards ladies. Many small business owners have little in the way of advertising budgets, especially in today’s economy. This means they have to be more creative in how they approach marketing.

Whatever ideas you come up with, be sure you have a way of tracing your marketing campaign so you will know when it starts becoming less effective. Then it’s time to move onto the next idea. Asking potential customers where they heard about you, using multiple toll-free numbers, or coding your ads are all possible ways of following your marketing. It can be argued that expanding your business through marketing is one of the most important things you can do for your business. Marketing doesn’t have to be difficult; it just has to be creative.
