Alcoholism is one of the most prevailing vices through out the world. It has ruined the lives of many a people and has also destroyed many families. The phenomenon of Alcoholism has been prevalent for a very long time. Modern medical researchers, have come up with solutions and treatments to curb this problem.
Many a times alcoholism refers to habit of intoxication, prolonged or excessive consumption of alcohol, that leads to harmful deposition of intoxicants in the body as well as loss of constitution and control over one's actions. Alcoholism also drastically affects the health of an alcoholic. Initially every alcoholic starts drinking "just for fun". However, this drinking starts to take a very bad turn when the person gets addicted to a specific periodic quota of alcohol. Total addiction is seen when the person is unable to survive without consumption of alcohol. At this stage, the person is said to have become an alcoholic. There are many drawbacks of alcoholism. First draw back is that the person cannot survive without consumption, which eventually leads to extreme deterioration of health, especially of liver. An alcoholic also looses his constitution, and starts behaving irrationally. Alcoholism also causes many family and financial problems. To prevent any further damages due to alcoholism, many rehabilitation centers have come up with methods of detoxification, that is commonly referred to as detox.
What is Alcohol Detoxification
A person is said to have become alcoholic when he is unable to survive without consumption of alcohol. The level of damage that has been caused due to excessive consumption of alcohol can also be measured with the help of blood chemistry tests, electrocardiograms and x-rays.
First step to rehabilitate and detoxify a person from alcohol is to curb the source of alcohol and stop its intake. The withdrawal symptoms are observed and carefully studied. As the addict is dependent on alcohol, withdrawal symptoms severely affect the persons health. In cases of extreme addiction, patient always displays abnormal behavior and craves for intake. If symptoms are extreme, then medical experts intervene with the help of medication. This medication usually pacifies the patient.
During alcohol detoxification, the addict often undergoes traumas and emotional upheavals. Counseling helps the patient in realizing the reason for their addiction. Most councilors make the patient understand alternative solutions to situations that made them addicts. Counseling is considered to be the safest way to rehabilitate an addict because, the addict is thus convinced of the vices of alcohol. It also helps the patient to regain his sobriety, peace of mind and constitution. Many personal behavioral problems are worked upon during these counseling sessions. Some rehabilitation centers also make patients interact within themselves. The patients thus eventually realize the solution to their problems with help by their fellow-addicts. The process of counseling can also become time consuming, but it changes each and every patient into a different human being, set upon a journey of self actualization.
It is said that gold has to undergo intense heat of fire to shine, same is applicable in case of alcoholic detoxification. The patient becomes a totally different person. Realization of addiction, and reason behind it, has to be understood by the patient. However, aftercare is also very necessary. During an aftercare process, doctors, relatives and friends have to encourage and boost the addict to refuse alcoholic beverages, and for that matter any other substance that he or she might get addicted to. Most important part of the aftercare is to prevent the person from undergoing any similar experience that made him an alcoholic. Every person belongs to a society and in every sense is dependent on it for survival. Alcohol detoxification program helps the person to get adapted to the society once again.
