Albert Memorial, a Memorial in Gothic Revival Style

Located in Kensington Gardens in London, Albert Memorial was built as a result of a concept by Queen Victoria who dedicated it in memory of her beloved husband who died of typhoid. Designing of the memorial was by Sir George Gilbert Scott whose ultimate objective was to build a memorial in Gothic revival style.
Albert Memorial is considered as a national monument of a good and wise man which is worth a visit by anyone who is traveling to London wanting to leisurely examine attractions of artistic value. When many of the public monuments are dedicated to military chiefs, Albert Memorial is built to commemorate a man who was famous in setting high standards in peace, and of good morality.

The statue of Prince Albert faces south and was seated in 1875; the memorial was officially opened in 1872 after taking 10 years for its completion. As written in history a cost of £120,000 was undergone for the construction of this memorial. The memorial is 176 feet tall that include the statue of Prince Albert robed as a Knight of the Garter holding a catalogue of The Great Exhibition. This resplendent monument located opposite the Royal Albert Hall is a true depiction of Prince Albert’s interests as well as the Victorian achievements. Each corner of the memorial displays marble figures that represent groups from the continents of the world. Each of these groups’ displays large animals and ethnographic groups such as an Elephant for Asia and a Camel for Africa. At the corners of central and outer areas there are allegorical sculptures that depict Victorian industrial arts and science which include agriculture, engineering, commerce and manufacturing.

Around the base of the memorial, the Parnassus frieze depicts composers, artists, painters, architects, poets and musicians. The frieze also houses 187 carved figures and visitors are given the opportunity to have a closer look to appreciate the craftsmanship of these figurines. The canopy at the memorial features internal and external mosaics and coloured stones.
