Alan and Marie: Chapter 3
Their second meeting doesn't go quite the way Marie would have liked, as Alan doesn't outwardly share her passion, at least not now.
The fifteen-minute drive from school to Eddie's gave her a little time to think about her situation. If I can just keep it a fling, just a couple of make-out sessions, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s pheromones, after all. That’s what Eddie said, and I’m sticking to it. Marie pulled up behind Eddie’s car. She got out and went inside. Eddie asked her, "So when is Alan supposed to be over here?"
"I don’t know. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him again. Soon, I think. He probably had to stop by his house. "
She flopped down on Eddie’s bed and covered her face with a pillow. From underneath it, she let out a deep sigh. Eddie asked her, "What happened?"
The desire to confide in someone was overwhelming, so she let it spill. Eddie was her best friend, anyway. If she couldn’t tell him, she shouldn’t be doing it.
"We made out Monday night, after the Meet the Bears thing. And it was amazing, like, didn’t want to get out of the car, didn’t want to stop holding him amazing." She laughed, and then continued, "We didn’t get home until almost ten."
Eddie looked at her in amazement. He asked, "You made out with him for three hours?"
"No, we actually talked for the first hour, and then we put on music, and he had to ‘show me his speakers’ which just so happened to be in the backseat. That’s all she wrote."
"So he instigated it?"
"No, not really. It was mostly me. But he certainly didn’t stop me."
Eddie paused a moment before asking, "You don’t feel guilty, do you?"
She smiled. "Not at all."
Just then they heard the exhaust pipes of the Camaro as Alan pulled into the driveway. She ran out to meet him while Eddie stayed inside. She hugged him hard and looked up at him. They locked eyes again, and she kissed him softly on the lips.
She said, "I told Eddie." Before he could protest she said, "I know he won’t tell anyone. And he doesn’t care."
Alan didn’t know what to think about someone knowing, but he did agree they needed a "safe" house. He figured Eddie was probably the best bet for that position.
He began the speech he had been preparing all day. "Well, I just wanted to talk to you about all this. I mean, I want to stay friends, but I don’t think we should, you know, do what happened the other night anymore. It isn’t right."
He could tell she was disappointed. "Think about it. If you were in Lynn’s shoes, and your boyfriend was cheating on you, wouldn’t you be really upset? And what about William? I know I would be hurt if I were him. I know that makes me a hypocrite, since I’m the one messing with his girlfriend, but…"
"Yeah. But I’m not in Lynn’s shoes. And you’re not in Will’s shoes. It’s okay, though. I understand. And it isn’t right but that makes me wonder."
"Wonder what?"
"If it’s so wrong to do what we did, how come I don’t feel the least bit guilty about it? I don’t feel guilty, and I’m still not sorry."
He didn’t expect these words to come out of her mouth, at least not then. He could tell by the look on her face she was waiting for some kind of response. What am I going to say? He didn’t want to stop any more than she did but he felt so guilty about it!
"I mean, it’s only a matter of time before it would have to end, anyway! And what if people found out about us? Lynn would probably kick both our asses. And I don’t want that to happen."
Marie stubbed the ground with her toe. She started quietly.
"I just want to hang out with you more often, Alan. I don’t want to feel weird around you because of what happened."
He felt bad almost immediately. She stared up at him, her blue eyes teeming with sincerity. He hugged her then and said, "Okay. We can do that."
