Plants which are used to produce the agave nectar include Blue Agave (Agave tequilana), Salmiana Agave (Agave salmiana), Green Agave, Gray Agave, Thorny Agave, and Rainbow Agave. However, the Blue Agaves, which thrive in the volcanic soils of Southern Mexico, are the ones which are extensively used for the production of the nectar. This is because this particular species of the agave plant contains high carbohydrate content which results in high fructose content in the final product.

Agave Nectar Benefits

» Agave nectar is about 1.4 to 1.6 times sweeter than sugar, however, it has an appreciably low glycemic index (GI) and low glycemic load (GL). Being a low glycemic index food, agave nectar does not cause sharp rise in blood sugar level, nor causes sharp fall. The agave nectar has a glycemic value of 27, compared to other sweeteners which have values of 32 and above.

» The agave nectar is rich in what is known as saponins. These are a class of chemical compounds, better classified as phytochemicals. According to the Journal of Medicinal Food, these substances act on the immune system to help lower cholesterol, and reduce risks of developing cancer. Given their rich content of antioxidants, saponins also prevent free radical damage. They also reduce blood lipids, and lower blood glucose response.

» The nectar also contains inulin. It is a kind of fiber which has a low impact on the blood sugar level, it helps in feeling fuller for a long time, and reduces appetite. All these factors make this fiber an effective way to lose weight.
