Affiliate Marketing - Much Ado About… What?

A look at what the new affiliate really needs to know to succeed and why most affiliate marketing 'Gurus' do not deliver.
Much is written about affiliate marketing and how to do it. There is no shortage of opinions or self-appointed ‘Gurus’ of the craft. Many over-priced ebooks claim to provide the ‘secrets’ to easy online riches. Most practitioners of it do not perceive the overnight success model as valid.

Many new affiliates, keen to achieve early success and excited by the marketing hype, will buy the affiliate marketing guide of the moment. The guide, of which there are hundreds, offers its ‘foolproof scheme’, ‘guaranteed’ to work. However the scheme rarely, if ever, delivers. The reasons for this vary but usually relate to the guide presenting an over-simplistic model and failure to provide adequate guidance as to how to overcome everyday obstacles.

So how should the new affiliate proceed if self-help guides are often inadequate? Well, very often a change of mind set is needed. With all those ‘Gurus’ telling you how easy it is, it’s natural to believe that all you need is the right ‘key’ and you will unlock an online fortune.

Like any skilled endeavor, to succeed in affiliate marketing, you have to put some effort into learning the facts. You cannot avoid educating yourself. To this knowledge you must add some experience and a lot of perseverance. It’s obvious, of course, but the vast majority of affiliates fail because they do not take account of the fact that if you want to achieve anything in life, you have to work at it.

What knowledge do you need? Here are the most important areas:

• You must understand that affiliates require to pursue niche markets and know how to identify viable niches to pursue.
• You must know how to use webmaster tools to tailor your marketing campaigns using appropriate keywords.
• You must know how to assess affiliate programs that you may wish to join, know how to identify successful (and unsuccessful) campaigns once up and running, and be able to monitor and respond to your site’s statistics.
• You must have an excellent understanding of on-site and off site search engine optimization.
• You must understand that the primary function of your website is to provide information, while having some understanding of marketing psychology and how to sell online.
• Web-building skills are essential, along with a detailed understanding of keywords placement, use of individual keyword pages and numerous other essentials of website content.
• Awareness of the strengths and limitations of pay per click advertising. Includes how to use it successfully on Auto-pilot for multiple income streams.
• How brand bidding can be used in some cases to good effect
• Why building ‘a list’ is so important, how to do it and how to exploit it

If you neglect these important areas – and you need to know everything you can in each category - you are unlikely to succeed in affiliate marketing. If you do your homework and apply yourself with appropriate energy, you give yourself the best possible chance of success.
