Advantages of Artificial Insemination

One of the many advantages of artificial insemination is that it is painless and has no related side effects. Scroll down for detailed information on the same.
Artificial insemination (AI) is a method that forms a part of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in which artificial means are used for impregnating the women. Artificial insemination involves placing the sperm in the reproductive tract of the female. It was basically used to treat certain kinds of infertility issues in men and women. Due to the many advantages, it is one of the most commonly used techniques of assisted reproduction. Here we will see more on the various aspects of this method.

What is Artificial Insemination

Infertility in human beings can occur due to many reasons, like the male is unable to produce sperms, low sperm count, the sperm is not able to reach the fallopian tubes for fertilizing the egg, the fertilized egg does not get implanted in the uterus, etc. In these cases, artificial insemination is used for impregnating the female. It involves two procedures:in the first method, the sperm is placed inside the cervix (Intracervical Insemination, or ICI); while in the second procedure, the sperm is placed inside the uterus (Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI). Let us now take a look at the advantages of this method.

What are the Advantages of Artificial Insemination

The first and the foremost advantage of this method is that it helps in overcoming problems related to conceiving. The sperm used for artificial insemination is either obtained from the male partner of the female, or from a sperm bank. Earlier this technique was used only for couples to have kids; today single women and same-sex couples are opting for this method to have kids.

Secondly, artificial insemination process is used in case the male partner suffers from a hereditary or genetic disorder. The sperms used for this process are washed and tested for any genetic disorders or imbalance. Therefore, there are lesser chances of such disorders being passed from the parent to the child. Artificial insemination is closer to the natural method of reproduction, as compared to other methods of assisted reproduction like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Therefore, this method is widely adopted by couples.

Thirdly, when talking about the artificial insemination success rate, we again find that this process has an upper hand among all the other procedures. The success rate of artificial insemination is as high as 86%. However, it should be noted that there are several factors involved in the same. Similarly, when comparing intracervical insemination and intrauterine insemination, it is found that the success rate of intrauterine insemination is higher, and as high as 80%.

One of the other advantages is its cost. If you take a look at the artificial insemination cost and that of other methods, you will find that artificial insemination is less expensive. The average cost of other methods like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is higher than AI. Secondly, the cost of intracervical insemination is lesser than that of intrauterine insemination. On the other hand, as mentioned above, there are relatively no side effects associated with AI, which makes it more advantageous.

On summing up the above, we can conclude by saying that the benefits of artificial insemination include its effectiveness, low cost and prevention of genetic disorders to a greater extent. Lastly, note that this write-up was meant for information purposes; you should consult the doctor to know more on it, and also to find out whether it will be helpful to you or not. Take care!
