Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Fishbowl
Ever wondered whether using fishbowl is considered a perfect home for your pet fish? This article will tell you about the advantages and the disadvantages.
Using fishbowl has an advantage in the sense that it can be placed anywhere on any surface and it can also be moved around easily. With its small size, fishbowl is easy to clean and thus require less maintenance. It is also suitable to be placed on a location whereby space is a limitation.
However, one big disadvantage of using fishbowl is that, it can only accommodate few fish and also limited to certain types of fish. Goldfish is definitely not an option but even if you manage to stuff it inside, soon enough, you will find that fishbowl is somehow not suitable. Only the smaller sized fish like neon tetra and swordtails are meant to be kept in fishbowls.
With size usually less than 1-gallon, it can lead to stunted growth and fish living in the bowl may not be as active as those staying in the large aquarium tank. The main reason is because, fishbowls are designed with narrow neck and thus that means less surface area for exchange of gases. Be forewarned that with lower volume of water, accumulation of ammonia will cause rapid changes in water chemistry and that will poison your fish.
Since fishbowls provide limited space, there is also not much choice or option when it comes to selecting aquarium decoration especially those large ornaments. You will also find it hard to have aquarium plants since the substrate and gravel itself will occupy a lot of space. Nevertheless, fishbowls are still useful as temporary containers when performing aquarium cleaning or you can also use it as hospital tank for sick fish.
Finally, if you fancy large community aquarium with different types of fish, I would suggest you get a proper fish tank and choose largest aquarium size.
