Advantage Multi for Dogs
Advantage flea drops have been selling in huge quantities for years. But now, we have the option of buying Advantage Multi for dogs instead. So what does Advantage Multi do and do we need it?
Multiple Parasites Controlled
Ordinary Advantage for dogs simply controls fleas. Advantage Multi works a lot harder. As well as fleas, intestinal worms and heartworms are controlled with this topical treatment. The maker's, Bayer, have kept the original flea killing power by incorporating the same insect nervous system disruptor, imidacloprid.
If you already use their original flea drops and are happy with the results you can expect to be satisfied to the same degree if you switch to Advantage Multi. The flea killing power is identical. Virtually all adult fleas should be destroyed within 12 hours of using these flea drops.
Most dog owners use a regular de-wormer in addition to any flea treatment in order to control intestinal parasites. Advantage Multi for dogs incorporates this into the drops so you have one less medication to buy and remember to use. The treatment is highly effective at destroying whipworms, hookworms and roundworms, which are commonly picked up by our pets.
Perhaps of most significance for many dog owners is the ability of Advantage Multi to prevent heartworm disease in our pets. The secondary active ingredient, moxidectin is quickly absorbed into your pet's bloodstream where it tackles all heartworm larvae which have infected the dog during the previous month.
Using Advantage Multi for dogs correctly will ensure larval heartworms are never able to develop into disease causing adults. Over the last twenty years the problem of heartworms for dogs has grown in both numbers and land area. What was once a problem only in swampy mosquito ridden areas is now becoming more widespread.
The risk of the disease is of course greatest still, where mosquitoes are most prevalent. But, cases of heartworm disease in dogs have now been recorded in all 50 states. With Advantage Multi for dogs providing a way to prevent heartworm whilst still providing the total flea control of original Advantage flea drops many owners have made the switch. Reducing the number of medications we need to buy for our pets makes life easier and can work out cheaper over-all.
Using Advantage Multi for Dogs
If you already use topical flea drops, you know how to use Advantage Multi. The drops must simply be applied to the skin between the shoulder blades. The dog should be kept in for half an hour so you can ensure they do not lick the product or rub it off. Children should be kept away from dogs for two hours after treatment, to ensure they do not ingest any of the pets medication.
With ordinary flea spot on treatments, the skin's own system of oil glands transfers the flea killer over the surface of the animal's body. Advantage Multi uses this system to deliver the flea control ingredient. In addition, the ingredient which destroys the internal parasites is absorbed through the skin, into the bloodstream. Here it is able to destroy larval heartworms found in the circulatory system, and is delivered to the digestive system where intestinal parasites are killed.
Advantage Multi Safety
Whilst this topical flea and heartworm medicine has an extremely good safety record, any pets medication should be used with care.
First and foremost, the product sold for use on dogs should never be used on cats. Our pet's metabolisms are quite different and a medication which is safe for one may be quite dangerous for another.
Secondly ensure you use the correct dose for your animal's weight. Puppies from seven weeks (3lb or more) and kittens from nine weeks (2lb or more) can be started on Advantage Multi.
Thirdly, speak to your vet before using on a chronically ill or underweight pet. Nursing and pregnant animals should also only be given such treatments on the advice of a medical professional.
Forthly, use Advantage Multi as directed. That, is every thirty days. Before initiating treatment with this or any other heartworm preventative make sure your dog receives a heartworm test from your vet. If already infected with the disease they may need alternative treatment. If you miss a dose, treat your pet immediately. Then continue every thirty days from this new date. Do not 'double dose' to counteract the missed treatment. If you forget to give the topical heartworm treatment for two months, speak to your vet about a heartworm test.
Finally as with any medication you should keep an eye on your pet after use. Though allergic reactions are extremely rare you should be vigilant, and if concerned speak to your vet. If you are looking for one convenient way to prevent heartworms, intestinal worms and control fleas, Advantage Multi for dogs may just the ticket.
