Adding Value to Your Home with Replacement Windows

Making small changes to your living space can make a big difference. While not often noticed as major decorative pieces, a change of windows in one's home can have many benefits.
There are many different types of replacement windows that can add curb appeal and real value to your home. New windows may also decrease heating and cooling bills, which may eventually lead to the windows actually paying for themselves. Additionally, replacement windows may also increase the safety of your home, as new windows will lock and close properly.

In addition to several different styles of replacement windows, there are also several different colors. Most windows can be painted (by the manufacturer) one color on the outside and another color on the inside, to match the home owner's exterior and interior color schemes. Some of these colors include white, cream, and imitation wood finish.

Double-hung windows are what most people think of as 'traditional' windows. They have 2 panels with a locking mechanism in the middle in between the two panels. To open the window, the bottom panel slides up to reveal a screen.

Casement windows have a crank at the bottom of the windowsill that allows the window to open. The home owner can open the window by turning the crank. This causes the glass to open outward. Usually, casement replacement windows are either one solid pane of glass, or have smaller squares of glass divided by wood or metal sections.

Awning windows are just like casement windows, but instead of the window hinging on the side, the window hinges on the top. This allows for a window to be open even during a rainstorm, because the glass shelters most of the screen and inside of the house from becoming wet.

Gliding and sliding replacement windows are placed on tracks in the windowsill. These windows are comprised of sets of 2 window panes set side by side, where the top panel slides over the bottom one. The window lock is located on the side of the topmost panel.

No matter what type of replacement windows are chosen, they will automatically add to the value of the home because they are an improvement. Another thing to consider is upgrading to bigger windows than what was originally installed in the home. This will be a greater initial cost, but bigger replacement windows will let more light into the house, which also may decrease the need to use lamps and light fixtures in the rooms during the day. This will also lower energy bills, in addition to decreasing drafts and air from getting in or escaping from the home.
