Acne Rosacea: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Acne Rosacea is a common disease that can disfigure your skin and gives a very bad look to your face.
Acne Rosacea (pronounced as roh-zay-sha) is a common skin disorder that affects a significant number of people sometime during their life. Let’s briefly examine its symptoms, causes and treatments in this article.

Symptoms

Most common symptoms of this disorder are patchy redness of the skin, inflammation, and in some cases, pustules on the affected area. The areas that are commonly affected include cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Initially, you may experience a red flushing of the skin which usually disappears after some time, but only to reappear again in a while. This happens when tiny blood vessels close to the skin surface dilate. These areas become blotchy and get covered in papules. Sometimes, you may also find pustules and bumps on the skin. This often results in people mistaking it for a kind of acne vulgaris. The skin may thicken as time passes and tiny blood vessels may stand out (telangiectasia) when you are experiencing an attack.

You may also experience burning or discomfort in the eyes. In addition, it may be accompanied by rhinophyma, which typically disfigures your facial contours to a significant extent. Rosacea is not commonly found amongst teenagers though it doesn’t mean teenagers can’t get affected by it. Typically, people between the ages 30-50 are most likely to suffer from acne rosacea. Furthermore, it affects a greater number of women than men, though men may have more severe symptoms. People who have a fair skin have a relatively high risk of these attacks.

The symptoms generally appear in a gradual manner. So people tend to neglect it till the condition becomes really bad. This is unfortunate, considering the fact that acne rosacea tends to get worse if it is left untreated.

Causes

Scientists have failed to find out the reasons behind this condition. The only link that has been established is a genetic one. People who have acne rosacea often have family members suffering from the same condition. It is mainly hereditary in nature. However, it may be aggravated by factors like exposure to the sun, stress and clogging of the pores by skin mites. It may also be caused by Vitamin B deficiencies.

Treatments

There are no known cures that can eliminate acne rosacea from the roots. However, you can use several treatments to control and limit the harm. Physicians often treat this condition on the basis of individual symptoms. For instance, if your skin is only red and puffy, your dermatologist may prescribe sunscreens and emollients for you. If you also have pustules and bumps together with redness, your doctor may put you on topical antibiotics, retinoid or sulphur lotions. These lotions can improve your condition significantly. However, it takes about 2 to 3 months before you can notice significant results.

Laser and light treatments are also being used to treat acne rosacea. This is done by directing a laser towards the leaking blood vessels under the skin, so that they are neutralized. This is done without damaging the surrounding tissues. This treatment has become very popular in recent times.

And since it can sometimes be caused from lack of B-complex vitamins, it is also a good idea to consume a sufficient amount of vitamin B. If you don’t take it naturally in your diet, you can also go for vitamin B supplements.
