Acid reflux is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, which can be annoying and can hamper one's daily activities. There are many methods (both home remedies and clinical treatment options) for treating acid reflux in an effective manner.

In order to reduce the effect of acid reflux, mix 3-4 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to half a glass of warm water. If you find this concoction too bitter, you can mix honey to reduce its bitterness.
  • Drinking barley grass juice is also beneficial in curing this ailment, since barley grass is replete with chlorophyll and amino acids which have anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the inflammation of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Slippery elm has soothing effects on the mucous membrane in the esophagus. One of the benefits of using slippery elm is that there are no known side effects of this herb.
  • Licorice root is also used for treating acid reflux disease. This root taken in the form of a powder can heal the abrasions in the lining of the esophagus caused due to excess acid. Taking deglycyrrhizinated licorice tablets before meals will reduce the amount of acid produced during digestion, and hence ward off acid reflux.
  • Cabbage juice has a high content of glutamine that has a wonderful and soothing effect on the gastrointestinal tract.
  • The gum produced by an evergreen shrub called mastic is a popular remedy for curing acid reflux. Mastic gum contains hydrochloric acid that is antibacterial in nature and destroys helicobacter pylori, which is a causative factor for acid reflux.
Apart from the above mentioned remedies, it is also necessary to follow a proper diet. Include vegetables like beans, broccoli, carrots, cabbage and peas that are high in fiber. Eat whole grain foods and fruits that are easily digested. Beverages like herbal teas can also be included in the diet. Strictly avoid eating spicy or oily foods if you want quick relief from acid reflux. Fruits that have a high content of citric acid like oranges and lemons are a strict no-no. Also reduce the consumption of caffeinated and carbonated beverages.
