The esophagus has a valve-like sphincter or a cluster of muscles at its stomach end that allows consumed food matters to flow into the stomach, and not the other way round. In other words, it controls the one-way passage of food into our stomach. When this sphincter fails to work, it can cause portions of the acidic stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus. In some cases, the reverse flow can reach the throat itself. This reflux is the primary cause of the acidity and heartburn in adult men and women. These include deep fried or fatty foods, whole milk, peppermint, chocolate, creamed savories and thick soups. One should keep away from fast foods as far as possible. Natural, unprocessed beverages such as non-mint herbal tea, green tea and apple juice
It is worth remembering that while these food items will help in reducing the frequency of the problem, they cannot provide a lasting cure. No, that is never possible.
