About Wardrobe Armoires

Learn about how wardrobe armoires have changed over the years. Here you can learn about some of the most popular armoire styles from both the middle ages and today.
All these years, despite several changes in style and design, the wardrobe armoire never changed its purpose – it is still a standing closet used primarily as storage of clothing.

During the Middle Ages, the earliest wardrobe armoires (or simply wardrobe) was in a form of a chest. Then, it evolved slowly into a closet that has a large space where you can place your shield, armor and arms and drawers were you can store folded clothing. In the 18th century, thanks to renowned master furniture makers - Thomas Chippendale, Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite – the wardrobe started to develop into its modern and current form.

From being a simple storage of clothing before, the armoire now has transformed into a piece of furniture that has several functions and uses. Among the many variations are jewelry armoire, TV/entertainment armoire, office/computer armoire and many more. It has become so versatile that furniture makers now keep on making new uses or hybrids of the armoire.

The wardrobe armoire basic and prominent design is that it has two large doors (that are sometimes installed with large mirrors as big as the doors itself) that enclose the whole mouth of the armoire. There are drawers below, but this is an optional design. Also, the hybrid wardrobe armoire sometimes contain a place where you can place the TV/DVD/ game consoles or an safety deposit box or make up center.

Because it is a huge storage area, people also store their other stuffs there like toys, gym equipments, pillows and blankets. And it saves a lot of space too, giving you more space in your bedroom.

Aside from its function, the wardrobe armoires is noted for its intricate and ornate decorations and stylish design. Most of the design, of course, that are still being used today comes from Chippendale, Sheraton, and Hepplewhite. These three great furniture makers elevated furniture making into an art form and that is the reason why their designs still live on until today because of their timeless qualities. And that is why, most people are paying top dollar for original antique armoires that were made during the heydays of Chippendale, Sheraton, and Hepplewhite.

Another thing to consider would be the material used to make the armoire. Before, they use oaks, pinewood, mahogany and walnut to make the furniture. But as time passed by, new technologies were invented to make composite woods that can substitute hardwood or softwood as materials for any wood furniture. Now, it would be wise to check first if the armoire you are buying is durable and worth it. Read customer feedback so you’ll know which furniture shops makes A grade armoires. If you found one that you are looking for, buy it and never regret it. There is nothing greater than having a nice piece of furniture that gives you so much functionality and worth all the money spent.

Lastly, you now have enough storage for those items cluttering all over your house. Now, you can easily organize and make your home tidy and orderly.
