The tea from Assam is a lowland tea, unlike Nilgiri Hills and Darjeeling hills. The Assam tea tree is a sub species and its variants can still be seen growing in the wild.
Though like the Darjeeling tea the seeds of Assamese tea were earlier brought from China but the local variant proved more successful and hence its commercial plantation took roots.
