Abortion Doctor Killed in Kansas Church, Suspect in Custody

Doctor George Tiller, one of only a handful of doctors to perform late-term abortions in the U.S., was shot and killed while serving as an usher at a church service in Kansas.
Scott Roeder is being charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault after police arrested him nearly 200 miles from the church where he shot and killed Dr. George Tiller during Sunday services. Roeder is believed to have been associated with at least a few militant groups over the years and he is described as being a fanatic about abortion. Dr. Tiller endured years of torment and attacks from anti-abortion groups and was actually shot in both arms in 1993 and his clinic was bombed in 1985.

Dr. Tiller's clinic was one of only 3 in the nation that performed abortions after the 21st week of pregnancy, which is when a fetus is typically considered to be viable outside of the whom. His lawyers, in speaking to reporters, explained that Tiller felt like if he didn't provide the service, that women would be forced into dangerous situations to have those types of procedures.

Dr. Tiller did not have a security guard with him at the time of the shooting, nor was he accompanied by a federal marshal. He most recently had the protection of federal marshals in 2001 and it is not uncommon for doctors providing abortion services to receive federal protection.

At this point, all indications are that Scott Roeder acted alone and that he had no accomplices. Police are still searching various properties used by Roeder and interviewing family members and associates. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be forthcoming as official charges are filed.
