What is Abortion
Abortion is usually carried out when a woman has unintended pregnancy. Abortion was made legal in United States in the year 1973 by the Supreme Court. There are some restriction imposed on this practice, by the same, and these restriction vary from one state to another. There are women who worry whether this medical method is safe or not. Rest assured this method is absolutely safe. Many women or couples, who are not yet ready to be parents, abortion is the safest way for them . There are some insurance companies which cover the costs. But sometimes it might happen that either the couple or the woman does not have any insurance. So how much does one have to pay then? Here are the various expenses that a woman might have to face if she is not insured.
The Actual Cost
The cost of getting an abortion done, depends on several factors; first the length of the pregnancy (how long the woman has been pregnant, whether few weeks or months), the type of anesthesia that the doctors are using (general or local) and also the procedure that is being followed. It also depends on the State the woman is in, and also the clinic from where she is getting her abortion done. If one is going for an abortion which is covered by an insurance, then the whole process will cost you anywhere between $20 to $ 200, and this depends upon the plan of the insurance policy.
- The cost is usually between $360 to $910, the average cost being about $450. This is what one has to pay for the first trimester. As the pregnancy period increases, around $100 are added per week. This is done after 11 weeks of pregnancy.
- If the abortion takes place during the second trimester i.e. after 11 weeks then the cost of abortion might be around $500 to $1000. Sometimes, depending on the length of pregnancy, the cost might even go up to $2500. There will also be the hospital charges because, after abortion in the second trimester, the woman has to be kept in the hospital for sometime.
- Abortion after that, i.e. 20 weeks or later, the cost of abortion without insurance can go up to more than $3000. So, if one is planning to go for an abortion, then it is best that one does that during the first trimester. During this time, surgery is not required. The cost also depends upon the procedure followed.
Having the baby, or getting an abortion done, depends entirely on the woman or the couple. It's a decision which will affect one's whole life. Hence it's important that one takes a decision wisely, and not take a decision on the basis of what others say and then regret it later. Now that you know what an abortion costs, you can plan wisely and then, only if you want, go get the abortion done.
