Abdominal Liposuction

Are you contemplating abdominal liposuction to get rid of your belly fat? Read on for some useful information on this procedure.
Accumulation of fats on the abdomen occurs in both men and women, though men are genetically more prone to it. Although there are various means to get rid of these fats such as exercises, diet plans, yoga, etc., yet fats on the belly can sometimes be too stubborn to be lost through these lifestyle changes. This is where abdominal liposuction steps in. It is the method of removing unnecessary fats from the abdominal region through surgery. The success of the procedure, however varies from person to person.

Abdominal liposuction is performed by a technique known as Tumescent Liposuction. In this, the fatty layers of the skin are filled with liquid local anesthesia and some other medications. This causes swelling in the fatty deposits, which makes them firm. When these compartments of fats firm up, it becomes very easy for the surgeons to efficiently remove the excess fatty layers from the patients body, without causing much pain and blood loss.

Factors Affecting Abdominal Liposuction

Abdominal Fat
Abdominal fat is of two types, i.e. superficial abdominal fat and deep abdominal fat. Superficial fat can be easily removed through the liposuction procedure as it is located just under the skin. Whereas deep fat, i.e. intestinal fat cannot be removed through surgery, as it might endanger the life of a person. So the success rate depends upon the kind of fat a person has. Men or women with more superficial fat will see a better success rate than the ones with deep intestinal fat.

Age and Sex
Abdominal liposuction can be more successfully carried out in female patients compared to males, as the fats on a woman's abdomen are much softer than a man's. Also, females have less fibrous fats compared to men, making their removal through liposuction much easier. Age is not a criterion as far as the success of this procedure is concerned. Even patients as old as sixty can reap the rewards of abdominal liposuction.

Recovery

Post surgery, the patient will experience soreness and swelling around the abdominal area. The levels of discomfort and pain depend upon the amount of fats that have been removed. Certain pain medications such as acetaminophen, are more than enough to get over it.

As far as swelling is concerned, it might take up to twelve weeks for the patient to finally get over it. Up to a period of twelve weeks, there might be firmness and lumpiness, around the abdominal area. In some patients it may take up to four months to get relief from this swelling, firmness and lumpiness.

Post liposuction, the upper abdominal skin might appear slightly crinkled. However, lower abdominal skin, due to its natural high elasticity, does not wrinkle at all. Although recovery time for both is the same.

As blood loss is minimal through the tumescent liposuction, so the bruising is also considerably reduced. Most of the scars and bruises get healed within a fortnight to a month.

Although abdominal liposuction procedure is quite safe, yet discussing any previous health problem, or if you have undergone any other surgery in that area, is very necessary to reduce the risks and the complications. The cost will vary from place to place and even in one place from hospital to hospital. So checking with your doctor will give you a fairly good idea about that. Once you are done with the surgery and the post surgery healing has also taken place, it is very important to start with abdominal exercises to strengthen the muscles in that area and to achieve a flat stomach.
