A Witness May Not Always Be Your Home Security
This article outlines why witnesses to crimes are unreliable.
Some very lucky people in Rahway, New Jersey are thanking a courageous neighbor for saving them from a costly loss. Apparently none of them were using a professional home security company and they suffered the consequence of having their homes burglarized. An alert area resident witnessed the intruder in the act and then saw him climb aboard a city bus to make his escape.
The Rahway police received the call in the afternoon while the burglary was taking place and even though they arrived quickly the suspect was already making his getaway. The witness, who remains unidentified jumped in his or her car and followed the NJ Transit bus, alerting the police as to the whereabouts of the public vehicle.
Eventually the police caught up with the bus, stopped it and apprehended the suspect, a resident of East Orange. The man has been charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief. When he was captured on the bus he was found in possession of three laptop computers, cash and approximately $4,000 worth of jewelry.
The families that were robbed are fortunate they have a neighbor that was willing to risk getting n the car to follow the suspect; otherwise they may never have recovered their stolen property. The majority of the break-ins that happen to people without a home security company watching over their home results in loss of valuable and sentimental items that may or may not be returned to them.
Installing a professional security system quickly deters a burglar from breaking into your home because window or door sensors and motion detectors set off an alarm when they are triggered. This instantly alerts the professionals monitoring your home and they contact the local law enforcement agency, who typically arrives at the scene within minutes. If your system includes video surveillance cameras, the police can usually identify and capture the intruders before they have gone too far.
The cost of protecting your home and valuables is a mere fraction of the cost of recovering from the trauma of a break-in and the hassle of replacing the lost items. Some items may be irreplaceable. It’s always better to be proactive about your safety rather than wait until it’s too late.
