A Whisper in the Night - Chapter 7

Chapter 7 :)
Hey everyone. I was reading the comments and one of them really irked me. If you know what's gonna happen, don't tell everyone else! That totally ruins the story!!

I've posted this story on booksie, which I mentioned in my profile info, so don't be all surprised. I know a lot of people who don't know what booksie is, so that's why I'm posting it here.

Thanks for reading! Please comment and Enjoy!!

I got home, dried tears staining my cheeks. Why did we keep fighting like this? I have no idea what's going on.

I dragged myself to my room and changed into a pair of sweats and a tanktop with a giant peace sign in the middle. I washed the makeup off my face and let my hair out of the bun. Walking into the kitchen, I opened the freezer and pulled out some ice cream. I grabbed a spoon, a box of cookies, and plopped myself onto the couch. I turned on the tv, flipping through the channels, and finally stopping at some random movie. I opened the ice cream container and started eating out of it. I scooped some ice cream using a cookie and munched down on it. Comfort food. The solution to all my problems.

I finished the ice cream and the box of cookies. A maid came and picked up the trash and I asked her to bring me a bag of chips and soda. She brought back a bag of Lays and a can of Sprite. I ate them quickly.

"You're going to get fat if you keep eating like that," Sara, another maid, scolded. I shrugged, although I knew she was right.

When I finished, I lay down the couch, my cheek against the smooth material. I fell asleep, my mind wandering into sleep.

I woke up with a blanket over me, the tv off, and the clock reading 12:54 am. I yawned, stood up, keeping the blanket around my shoulders, and started to my room. I walked up the stairs, slowly, wanting to just lay down on one of the stairs and sleep.

"Vanessa?" A voice behind me asked. I turned around slowly. Damien stood at the bottom of the stairs. It looked like he just came from work.

"Hmm?" I mumbled, my eyes starting to close. I was so tired. I wanted to go back to sleep.

"Are you alright?" He asked, climbing up the stairs. I nodded silently and turned to climb up the remaining stairs. I got to my room, and as I opened the door, Damien called to me. "Wait." He walked past me, into my room, and turned on the light. I shut my eyes quickly, the light blinding me.

"Ow," I said, rubbing my eyes. Damien stood in the center of the room and was sniffing the air. "Something's wrong." He said, his eyes scanning the room.

"Whatever," I wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying. I just wanted to sleep. But first I had to go to the bathroom. I went in, shut the door, and used the bathroom quickly. I went to the sink to wash my hands and did, but when I looked up into the mirror, I began to scream.

In the reflection, I could see a maid's body tacked to the back of the door, and above her, written in blood were the words: WE'LL BE TOGETHER SOON

Damien burst in, the door almost falling off its hinges. He pulled me into his arms, holding me, and I realized I was crying. "What happened? Shh, it's okay, I'm here." He repeated over and over again. I forgot all about being mad at him and clutched at him. I wouldn't let go. I was shaking hard, and I lifted a finger and pointed towards the door. Damien went over to the door and looked at the back. He cursed under his breath, and I could see him read the words. He glanced at my pale face, then back at the message.

"Vanessa, go to sleep, and don't worry, I'll handle this." I walked hesitantly past the door and he blocked the sight with his body. I crawled into bed while Damien got a couple of servants, that were men, to clean up the mess. Some of the maids came to see what had happened, but Damien ordered them to get out.

I shut my eyes as they carried the body out. I tried to fall asleep, but every time I closed my eyes, I would see the dead maid. Her blonde hair stained with blood, the cut on her neck, and the way her face was frozen in shock and horror.

I finally got to sleep, but I had a nightmare. I dreamt that instead of the maid being tacked to the door, it was me.

I woke up screaming and thrashing in bed, while Damien tried to soothe me. "It was just a dream, Vanessa, calm down. I'm here." And then he held me to his chest, where I fell asleep as he stroked my hair.

In the morning, Damien told me I didn't have to go to work. But I disagreed. "I'll be fine. And besides," I told him, "I'll be safer there than here." Damien agreed and I went to get dressed. I pulled on a pair of black pants that gave shape to my hips, and put on a red top that tied in the back. I let my hair down, and applied some waterproof makeup. I could never be too careful.

Damien drove me to work today and I didn't think he would let me drive after what happened yesterday. "Be careful," Damien warned.

"Okay," I said, not so sure about what. We got to the top floor and Damien disappeared behind his door office, just like everyday. I went to my desk and Jake pulled his chair next to mine.

"Good morning! How are you this morning?" He asked. I couldn't help but smile at his happiness. "I've been better." I admitted. " I didn't sleep well last night."

Jake frowned. "Oh I'm sorry. Why not?" I wasn't going to tell him the exact reason, so instead I said, "I had a nightmare."

Jake's face had a look of concern. "About what?" Man, this guy asked a lot of questions. "Um, I don't exactly remember." I lied, hoping he would drop it. Fortunately he did and stood to go back to his desk. "Well, feel better!" He said, swooping down to kiss me on the cheek. He left after that, and I put a hand over where his lips touched my cheek. The spot burned, and I couldn't stop the small giggle that came out quietly. I scolded myself and started to work.
