A Whisper in the Night - Chapter 5

Chapter 5 :)
Immediately, I brushed my hair back to expose my neck. I had to take care of him like he took care of me.

"Here," I urged, bringing his face to my neck. Damien's fangs grew, but then he pushed me away roughly.

"N-no. I can't." He said turning away from me. I leaned forward on my knees and pulled him to me. "Yes, you can. I won't be mad, I promise" I assured him.

Damien weakly brushed my cheek with the back of his hand. "Thank you..." He said quietly, as he leaned towards my neck. I closed my eyes as I felt his teeth graze my skin. Then he bit down.

I gasped as the skin broke and he began to suck. I could feel a trickle of blood fall down my neck and onto my shoulder. It touched my rose shaped mark, causing it to burn. I gritted my teeth against the pain. It was as if someone had set it aflame and was pressing hard against it. Damien finished and I slumped against the floor, the pain in my shoulder agonizing.

"Vanessa!" He exclaimed. "I'm so sorry," He pulled me into his arms and helped me up. I clutched at my shoulder. It was still burning, but it soon died down. I was breathing heavily, trying to ease the pain. "What is it?" He asked desperately. I shook my head.

"Noth-nothing." I stood up and my vision began to blur. I rubbed my eyes and Damien held me by the waist. "Are you alright?" He asked, as he steadied me. I had began to wobble sideways, but he caught me in time. I nodded and began to walk towards the car. Damien kept one arm around my waist as we walked, and I loved the feeling of it there. I sighed, moving closer to lean on him. He held me tight, probably thinking I was going to faint. But I felt fine. Or at least better than before.

We reached the car and I slid into the passenger seat. Damien started the ignition and zoomed out of the garage. I feel asleep in the car, my eyelids drooping casually as sleep overwhelmed me.

I woke up to find myself being carried inside, an arm hooked beneath my legs, another supporting my back. "Damien?" I mumbled, trying to look around.

"Shh, I'm here. You fell asleep in the car. Go back to sleep." His soothing voice said. I relaxed and did as he said.

When I woke up in the morning, I was tucked in bed in my pyjamas. 'Was it all a dream?' I wondered, thinking back to the previous night. Cautiously, I put my fingers on my neck, feeling around until I felt two punctures in the skin. I slowly brought my hand back down and closed my eyes. A knock on my door startled me and my eyes shot open. The door opened and a maid came in, head bowed.

"Lady Vanesaa, Lord Damien wishes you to head to work. He has already left and sends his apologies for not being able to take you. He wanted you to get some rest. Also, he says to cover your neck...?" I nodded, fully understanding what he meant although she didn't. Sure, all the maids and servants knew he was a vampire, but I don't think they thought he fed off of me.

"Thank you. You are dismissed," I said, getting out of bed. I moved towards my bathroom for a shower. I rinsed off quickly, wiping off the dried blood on my neck. I stepped out of the shower and turned around to see my mark. It was a deep crimson red, and I was shocked to see it so bright against my skin. This never happened before. Why now?

I dressed quickly, pulling on a blue turtleneck and a black skirt. Although the air had gotten chilly since we neared winter, I didn't put it in my thought to dress warmly. I slipped my feet into boots that were knee length, and zipped them up. I clipped my hair up into a messy bun with loose strands hanging over my face. I applied some eyeliner and mascara and grabbed my black purse. I left in a hurry, forgetting to eat breakfast. When I arrived to the office, it was 10:00 am. I walked into the elevator and as the door began to shut, a girl about a year or two older than me zoomed through the doors and into the elevator. "What floor?" I asked as I pushed the top floor button.

"Top floor, same as you." She replied, flicking her blonde hair back. She was about an inch or two taller than me, even when I was in boots. She had sparkling blue eyes, a fair complexion, and wasn't afraid to show her stuff. She was wearing a tight blouse that had a couple of top buttons open. A VERY short, grey skirt went about 2 centimeters past her butt, and I couldn't help but wonder why she would dress like that. She was wearing a lot of makeup, and I felt a bit jealous at how pretty she was. I was just...plain. Nothing special.

The elevator came to a stop and we stepped out, one at a time. She went first of course. "Vanessa! There you are. Mr. Olarin would like to see you in his office." Beth said as soon as she saw me. I walked all the way down to his office door and knocked. His voice came from the other side. "Enter,"

I twisted the doorknob and poked my head in. "Vanessa, you're finally here. Come in and shut the door, please." I did, and sat down at a chair across from his desk. He stared at me intently, and I could feel my cheeks getting warm.

"Um, you wanted me..?" I asked nervously. Damien nodded. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay. How's your neck?" I bit my lip, a habit I've always had, and looked down. "It's okay," I said quietly.

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him frown. "What's wrong?" He asked, concern in his voice. I didn't want to tell him about my mark, but I knew I had to. "It's the mark. The one on my shoulder. It's red. Not like red, from scratching it, but like crimson red." I answered nervously. Damien got out of his seat slowly and walked over to me. He stood behind me and I could feel his fingers pulling down my shirt at the neck. It stretched to my shoulder and I could hear his sharp intake of breath. "How did this happen? When did this happen? Why didn't you tell me before?" He questioned all at once. Before I could answer, the door creacked open and the blonde from before walked in.

"Am I interrupting something?" She asked, pausing at the door. Damien turned around to face her. "No, not at all, Cindy, come on in." He beckoned her forward and I stood to leave. I felt my heart drop when she rushed to him and flung her arms around his neck. She kissed him on the lips and squealed. "I missed you sooo much!" She giggled and I felt like I was going to be sick. I kept my eyes straight ahead and when I got to the door, Damien called out to me. "We'll finish our discussion later." I nodded silently and walked away. Tears threatened to fall, but I waited until I got to the bathroom.

After locking the stall door, I sank to my knees and cried.

How could he? And who was she? Why did she kiss him? Were they in love? How long has this been going on? Why didn't I know about this?
Questions swirled around in my head as I buried my face in my hands. What was going on?!
