Emphasis on was. It was impossible. Yet here I am. In the flesh, walking around, and partially insane. The Angel in me fought against the Vampire. Good vs Bad. Light vs Dark and all that jazz. It meant that apart from my already always just below simmering temper, I had random, uncontrollable outbursts. Where I would lose control and kill something. Usually some sort of animal. If that happened, it generally meant that the Vampire side of me had won for the time being. Although, on occasion, the Angel side kicks over the line and pushes my Vampire side away. When this happens, I feel very lovey-dovey and I do random acts of kindness to anyone who I cross. It's funny, well I think it is. My life is like a severe case of PMS.
Anyway, Mel and Mom have agreed it's time for me to go back to school. Much to my dismay. So now that it's the beginning of first semester, I'm being forced to go to a new school and try to rebuild my social life. Joy. So, today I'm headed for Marlow Creek High School to be educated in math, science, history and English, among my electives.
I pushed open my bedroom door and walked downstairs in my new school uniform. A plain gray skirt, a white shirt with the school emblem and knee high navy socks. It wasn't that bad actually, not that I'd let Mel or Mom know that. So I walked down our fancy mahogany staircase and into the sitting room where Mom was busy cleaning a sideboard with a collection of Wedgewood on it. Sensing my presence, she turned and smiled.
'Morning hun.' She said, walking to me. She enveloped me into a warm hug, and by habit, I stopped breathing. 'Oh, sorry. I forgot again.' She said quietly.
'Doesn't matter. I could smell you from my room.' I smiled brightly. Mom didn't seem to find my statement so "bright". I grinned jokingly, but I wasn't kidding. Mom relaxed a little.
'So, Melanie asked me to remind you not to eat anyone at school today...' Mom trailed off. I smirked.
'As if I'd "eat" a high school student. Seriously.' I scoffed.
'Perhaps Melanie doubts your preference for blood, but never mind. She merely asked I pass on the message.' Mom explained, turning her back to me and continuing to dust her precious Wedgewood. I shrugged.
'Whatever. I'm gonna grab a blood pack and go.' I said over my shoulder as I turned and began walking in the direction of our lavish kitchen. I grabbed my 'Up&Go' as I called it, from the fridge, heated it and sucked it down. Mom waved at me from behind the feather duster as I passed her on the way to the door. 'See ya!' I called to her.
I stepped out into the drizzle of Marlow Creek. An anticipating smile broke out across my features as I urged myself into a flat out sprint. The wind slashing into my face and through my hair made my grin spread even more. I slowed and came to a reluctant stop as I reached the gates....if someone was to see my supernatural speed....well, that would just suck. I looked down at my D&G watch. It was 7:15. And the bus was ambling down the dirt road as I raised my eyes. Perfect timing.
The bus's brakes squealed as I came face to face with the door. The driver leant over and pulled a lever, forcing the door open. I raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything as I climbed onto the bus. As the other teenagers caught sight of me, everything fell to silence. A few kids craned their necks to get a better view of me. I was the new kid. In a small-ish town. I was the new headline.
Funnily enough, as I walked down the aisle, bags fell onto the seats beside their owners. The humans instincts were telling them to look but don't touch. One backpack, however, stayed on the ground. I took the seat gratefully, momentarily wishing I hadn't.
The guy beside me was watching me intently. I could see him in my peripheral vision, his eyes could have been burning holes into me. I tilted my head a bit so I could see him better without being obvious. He was slightly tanned, with piercing blue eyes and silky brown hair that made me want to run my fingers through it. On closer inspection, I noticed a small scar on his face. A horizontal line, with a diagonal one slashed through it. I wondered what could have possibly given him such an interesting scar. I pushed the matter to the back of my mind and concentrated on the fact that he was still staring at me. I turned to look at him fully.
'Can I help you?' I asked in my best smart ass tone. He looked slightly taken aback. 'What? You didn't think I could see you staring?' I added.
'I was - am just curious.' He said confidently.
I raised an eyebrow. 'There is nothing to be curious about. I'm the new kid. Get over it.' I hissed, turning back to face the rear of the seat in front of us.
The guy was quiet for a moment. 'I'm Nick.' He said eventually. I nodded once, but didn't offer my name. He noticed my reluctance.
'You gonna tell me your name or what?' he asked impatiently.
'No.' I said curtly.
'Someone got out of the wrong side of bed.' He whispered to himself, under his breath.
'Someone needs to shut the fuck up.' I replied quietly. Nick made no attempt to hide his surprise.
'H - how did you...hear me?' he asked, partially stunned.
'Because. I'm clever.'
Nick said no more, but continued to stare, which irritated me almost as much. It was now I understood why Melanie had had me reminded not to kill anyone. The bus finally rolled to a stop and kids started filing off it, looking at me as they past. I got up swiftly and moved in with the line before Nick could follow. I needed to stay away from him, he asked way to many questions for my liking.
The drizzle had swept up a couple of notches to flat out rain, and everyone darted towards the school's main entrance in the vain hopes of not ruining straightened hair and what not. I rolled my eyes and jogged after everyone, but not before Nick had caught up with me.
'Why won't you tell me your name?' he asked, curiously.
'Because I don't need any stalkers.' I replied simply, trying to inconspicuously up the pace.
'Why would I stalk you?' Nick asked, stopping and taking my arm, forcefully. 'All I'm asking is your name.' He added, his voice hard.
I narrowed my eyes as I realized his grip would no doubt put a wrinkle in my jacket. Great. I placed my bare hand over his and tried to pull him off me, but the slightest touch from my forefinger and he ripped his hand off me, hissing. I frowned, my stomach lurching. Something was very, very wrong.
Nick looked from his hand to me, where a red welt in the shape of my fingertip was forming on his wrist. His eyes were hard, and they didn't reveal anything as we stood in the rain, locked in this silent exchange. 'I have to go.' He finally uttered out. His voice was cold and unforgiving. He turned away from me and walked, not in the direction of the school, but back down the road the bus had come.
I had absolutely no idea what had just happened, but one thought lingered in my mind. I dug my phone out of my pocket and pressed the speed dial. Melanie answered on the second ring. 'Please tell me you haven't murdered someone already! School hasn't even officially started yet!' Her voice was full of disbelief.
'No, I haven't killed anyone.' I said quietly, my voice extremely shaky.
Melanie instantly knew something else was wrong. 'Maggie, what is going on? What happened?' She pushed, her voice a mix of worry, apprehension and concern.
'I was on the bus...I - there was a guy... he asked questions...' I couldn't quite speak calmly. Nick knew something, and I hoped it wasn't anything Vampire related. I had the strange feeling that my hope was going to be crushed.
'This is about a boy?' Melanie cut me off. 'Couldn't you just have rung your mother if you were swooning?' she asked, her voice more relaxed.
'No, Mel.' I said, more confidently. 'This isn't about a boy exactly. I think I just met my first Angel.' I whispered hoarsely.
