A Touch Of Rain Ch.3

Chapter 3

I was enjoying my peaceful walk home from school. The sun seemed brighter, the sky seemed clearer, and the birds seemed chirper.
As soon as I got to the front door I knew something was wrong.
I jammed the key in the lock and quickly opened the door.
"Grace?" I called.
"Grace, where are you?" I was getting more frantic.
That was when I heard the small little squeal coming from the kitchen. I raced into the room and came to a halting stop. Jenifer was high-big surprise. But little Gracie was on the ground under Jenifer’s comparing hulking figure. Her little petite nose was dribbling blood down her face were it collided with the blood pooling at the corner of her mouth. Around one of her frantic looking eyes was a deep purple bruise where big crocodile tears continued to role down her cheeks.
Grace usually got her beatings too, but never had they been this severe. Maybe the usual belt whipping for spilling her milk at dinner or breaking something, but never like this.
"What are you doing to her? She’s just a little kid!" I screamed at the monster who had the nerve to do this to the fragile little creature sprawled on the ground.
"Well this little kid decided that she would have a cookie before dinner." Jenifer said sloppily.
I really didn’t have time to argue with this woman. I had to get Grace out of here as soon as possible.
"Come on Grace, were leaving." I said as I reached down to take her in my arms. She latched on, in as big a hurry as I was to leave.
"Hey you can’t just le-" The rest of her sentence was cut off as I slammed the door in her face.
And I ran. I just ran, with Gracie curled in my arms, together we ran to a place we both new we could escape reality for just a little while.
………………………………………………………………………………………..

"Hey sleepy head, how are you feeling?" I said softly to the baby like creature in my lap. Grace really does look like a baby. Though she is nine years old, she couldn’t be taller then four feet, with the tiny features to match. It was a wonder how two monsters could produce such a lovely little thing.
"My face hurts a lot." She said drowsily.
"I’m sorry sweetie." I had ripped a piece of my shirt off and wet it in a near by puddle, and washed the blood off her face.
We were in our special place. We called it Sunnyland because it seemed like it was always sunny here. It was a little forest down the road, in the middle of nowhere. This is where we would go to get away from Michal and Jenifer for at least a little while.
Grace was falling back asleep as I watched the sun disappear behind the clouds and a light drizzle fall from the sky. I knew we better start heading back home before we ended up getting lost on the forest, but I couldn’t make my muscles move. The cool steady drizzle coming from the sky relaxed the tensed muscles in my body and before I knew it I found myself leaning back and drifting to sleep with the light snore of Grace in my ear.
Because everyone knows you just need a touch of rain.
