A Tale of Two Sides
"Hold still Samantha!"
"Mom I want to go play!" I whined as she continued her poor attempt to comb my hair.
"Dinner is soon and you need to get ready!" She argued as I was still trying to undo the hold she had on my hair.
"What for!" I was now screaming. "I always eat alone with the Nanny while you and daddy eat in separate rooms! There's no point!" My words seemed to startle her because she let go of my hair and let out a light gasp. If the enormous house wasn't so quite I may have not even heard it. She sighed and let it go of my hair and I knew what that meant. I flashed out of the room before she could add anything else to the argument.
I ran as fast as I could, I didn't want to give her time to think, time to change her mind, or rationalize the fact that she, a grown woman had just been defeated by her five-year old daughter.
I continued to run. I refused to let my feet stop. I ran through the acres of land filled with green, lively meadows covered in all different kinds of colored flowers. I could hear the crystal clear water flowing from the fountains that seemed to be on every corner I turned. I continued to run. No matter how far I ran it never seemed far enough; because each time I turned the huge palace always stared right back at me. A constant reminder of who and what I was.
It wasn't the first time I had gone on one of my little running sprees. I always did the same thing, run as fast as I can until my legs give out. Each time after I became tired I would simply sit on one of the many wooden scattered benches and wait for one of our servants to come and find me. She was also my Nanny and took care of me since I had been born.
Once I stopped I never got the urge to start again. However this time was different, I didn't ever want to stop, I didn't want to be found. I passed the bench I had been sitting at the last time I had given up ongoing further and I started to remember the last time I had gone off running.
"There you are Sammy." She said sounding relieved.
I picked my head up my head up to look at her and then it fall back down. She sat down next to me as an awkward silence started to form.
"Why do they always fight?" I suddenly asked.
She let out a sympathetic sigh. "I wish I could answer that question."
It just didn't understand. I had seen it a million times; it always was the same way. The king and queen were supposed to be happily in love, always supporting each other while raising their sweet little Princess. A Princess who dressed in pink fluffed up gowns with tiaras entangled in her fancy done up hair. But I guess this was just different. This was a different kind of fairytale, Mommy and Daddy where just a different kind of King and Queen, and I was definitely a different kind of Princess.
I was exhausted from sprinting and felt as if I would just drop any second. I was panting rapidly and started to lose all strength I had in my legs; but I continued. I wanted to keep going, maybe if ran fast enough my feet would magically lift off the ground and I could go over the thick castle walls that toward over me. Mommy and Daddy say they were built to keep others out, but if you ask me they were built to keep me in. I dreamed of the day that I could escape my confinement and be a regular kid.
I was broken out of my thoughts when I approached a river, I had never seen it before, but then again I had never ran this long or ever gotten this far. On the other side of the river were more meadows covered with more trees and colorful gardens. There was a small wooden bridge connecting both sides and at the end of the bridge was a little boy.
He seemed to be studying a rock he found on the ground but the second he saw me approaching him he made his way to the middle of the bench and put one of his hands up ordering me to a halt. It wasn't then till I realized I was still running. I made my best attempt to immediately stop almost falling down in the process. I panted hard trying to catch my breath.
"Who are you?" He questioned me in a loud voice seeming almost, annoyed?
"My name's Samantha." I did my best to answer him in between breathes.
"Nice to meet you." I raised my hand and gave him a light smile.
He stared at me puzzled, as if he had never seen another human being before.
"Ew, you're a girl!" He said stating the obvious. "Although you don't look like one." He cringed his nose as if he had suddenly gotten a whiff of a toxic smell.
I examined myself and realized he was right; I didn't look like one. I had a red faded shirt under my blue overalls that had a tear on one of the knees. My black hair was in a messy ponytail and my dirt covered sneakers looked old from all the running I had done.
"Not like you look any better!" I snapped, but truth be told, he did.
He was around three feet tall, had on a royal blue button up shirt with the long sleeves neatly folded up. He wore what looked like brand new khaki pants and had nice combed light brown hair. He looked like a rich kid brought out of a movie. The image of the perfect little child. However it was weird to see a boy so neat, not that I had ever seen one in real life but they always looked disorganized on TV.
"It's better than looking filthy!" He shot back.
"Well I would rather look filthy then be a big Meany!" I yelled at him.
He looked at me confused, as if he was waiting for me to run away and cry. I may only be five but I was in no way prepared to back down from a little boy.
"Let's start over." He said suddenly. "My name is Gabriel." He extended his hand and I felt shock sweep over my body. Wasn't he yelling at me no less than five seconds ago, now he wanted to be friends? I was confused but still shook his hand.
"You can call me Sammy or Sam." His face lit up and it looked like he was happy that I wasn't mad at him.
"Sam." He repeated and I simply smiled.
We continued to talk for about an hour when I heard my name being called. "Samantha! Samantha!"
Just as I was about to reply Natalia, my Nanny Came into my view and I ran towards her.
"Natalia! Look! I made a new friend!" I took her arm and guided her back to the bridge but when we got there it was empty.
"There's no one here sweetie." She said calmly.
"No! There was! He was right here!" I looked exasperatedly for him but didn't see anyone.
"Come on Sammy we have to go, it's late." I hadn't realized how much time had past, the clear blue sky had now turned black, the sun had been replaced by the moon, and small stars appeared to help light up the night.
I sighed and followed her back to the castle turning back constantly to see if by any chance I could catch a glimpse of my new friend. He wasn't there.
