A Summer Filled With Wonder - Chapter 5

So I know it's been forever and I apologize. School has been crazy and I've had major writer's block. But enough with the excuses here's the next chapter, though it's a bit short, anyway, enjoy!
I had planned to walk back home alone but Phoenix took the initiative to escort me there. Which I guess was sweet of him.

Surprisingly the silence wasn’t as awkward as I thought it would be. It was even worse!!

We were walking at a steady pace and things would have been fine if I couldn’t feel Phoenix’s intense glances every five seconds.

Suddenly I stopped moving my feet waiting for him to notice that I wasn’t beside him any longer.

He turned around with his head down, never looking at me directly.

I pushed his shoulder. Snapping his head up he looks baffled.

"What you’ve never had a girl hit you?" I ask.

"Actually no, they would rather hit On me."

"Sure, I say sarcastically, I’m pretty sure that they thought about it. If they didn’t then they are obviously imbeciles." I grin. He grins back without a second thought.

It seems as if with this conversation we’ve silently agreed to forget the morning incident. Which was fine with me.

Phoenix walked me home and said goodbye. I went upstairs and I fell into a deep sleep, filled with happy dreams.

*2 Weeks From Now*

Things have been good. Life has been good. I mean my birthday is next week, me and Phoenix have decided to be besties, and I have someone to walk with to work every day from 10-3. A good deal I think.

***************************************************

Phoenix kept hinting that he had a ‘special’ surprise for me coming up on my birthday. I’m kind of skeptical, but eh it's Phoenix and anything that come from him I’m bound to like!

"This is nice. Just chilling after work no kind of distractions, just you, me and our tree." I look up at Phoenix and smiles. "Yep no distractions except for one."

"Oh really? What?"

"YOU!!"

He looks shocked then bursts into that infectious laugh of his. We were sitting under our tree. Yes, we have a tree. Remember the one I was sitting under when Phoenix attacked me with pictures? That’s our tree. We even carved our names into the trunk. He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me close. We just sat there and watched the clouds. I laid against his chest positioned right above his heart, hearing his increasing heartbeat. I sighed contently. Spending time with Phoenix always made my day. Luckily we hang with each other a lot considering that we live next door to each other and we both work at the same place. Sometimes we’ll have these little fun days, where us two, plus Scott and Jade would hang out and we always made sure to individually hang with them separately. Don’t want anyone getting all touchy about things.

June 20th - My Birthday!!

I woke up feeling refreshed and new, it took me a while to remember that today I was sixteen!! I jumped up and down on my bed feeling like a little kid despite the fact that I was older than I was yesterday. I ran down the stairs, I couldn’t wait to see what my mom and dad had gotten me.

I guess Scott had the same idea ‘cause he was running towards the kitchen with this silly grin on his face. He grabbed me and whirled me around, "Happy 16th baby sis!"

"Omg! Let me down!! Happy birthday to you too big bro!!"

He laughed but set me down nonetheless. We came into the kitchen to see our mom and dad waiting on us with two big bakery boxes and a visitor.

"Phoenix! What are you doing here?!" I ask. He grins.

"Did you really think I was going to miss the opportunity to eat cake for breakfast?"

"Oh really?" I raise an eyebrow. He chuckles.

"Of course not! I came to wish you happy birthday. Plus I got you something." I don’t miss the mischievous glint in his eye.

I make the mistake of getting myself caught looking into them.

"Hey man, it’s my birthday too." I hear Scott complain.

"Yeah you two lovebirds need to come back to human society and out of each other’s eyes." My dad calls out.

I feel the heat creeping up my face. Luckily when I blush it’s not very deep and not very noticeable unless you’re paying attention, which Phoenix apparently was, "I like it when you blush." He tells me, only causing me to blush even harder. Phoenix notices this too and gets that lopsided grin that started off being for when he was amused but now it seems as if it’s just for me, since he only uses that smile around me. Have I ever mentioned how much I loved his smile?

We did the whole singing happy birthday and blowing out candles after making wishes. Scott had a chocolate cake with a football that said, ‘Happy Birthday Scott!’, My cake wasn’t even cake it was a frozen red velvet cheesecake. Thanks to Phoenix it was freshly frozen. It had a whole bunch of candy lips on it with question marks around it and it said, ‘Happy birthday Random Summer.’

Of course Phoenix had his camera to catch the image. It was really fun. Scott was planning on having his party today as was I, so we had to compromise and have it together, for the first time since we were 3. I just hoped nothing would go wrong.

***************************************************

The house was completely crowded with my and Scott’s friends. I couldn’t wait for us to blow out the candles so everyone could go home. I wouldn’t even try to attempt to open all of my presents in front of everyone, then the night would never end. Dad had bought us these extravagant cakes that were for the party, but I liked our family cake that we had this morning better.

***************************************************

The last people finally trickled out the door. If this was any normal kind of party there would be this huge mess to clean up, but this wasn’t any normal party and it was my birthday so of course, being the OCD-inflicted person that I am, I made everybody clean up their mess before they tried to make their escapes. I know this party will go down in history, because who makes their guests clean up their messes?

The next day Phoenix and I was lying about in my room, chilling. I was pretty wiped out from yesterday and all the partying. After I made everyone cleanup we all headed out to the beach. To be honest it was quite romantic, what with all the holding hands and kissing going on while they looked out across the horizon. I’m going to let you in on a little secret, I am a hopeless romantic!! Honestly

"Summer?"

"Yes?"

"How do you feel about going for a walk?"

I shrugged my shoulders and lead the way. Of course I forgot to bring a jacket, it was sort of chilly outside, but I didn't say anything. I didn't want to impose or anything, but Phoenix had obviously seen me shivering and saw the goose bumps covering my arms.

"Here wear this." He says handing me his jacket.

"I'm good." I tell him. He shakes his head.

"It's not a suggestion, it's a command. You are not going to get the flu or pneumonia or any other sickness if I can help it." A tiny smile plays across my lips as he puts the jacket on me.

My arms couldn't even come out the end, but it sure was comfy. I breathed in the jacket that had Phoenix's smell all over it, Strawberries and freshly mowed grass. I breathed out with a deep sigh.

"I like this jacket." I tell him.

He raises his eyebrows.

"Oh?"

"Yeah, it smells like you, and it's warm. Everything about this jacket just screams 'Phoenix'."

He has this thoughtful look on his face when I finish explaining.

"Well you know since you like it so much, why don't you keep it?" he asks.

My eyes widen. "Are you serious?"

"100 percent."

I jump up and down then give him a hug, my head only coming up to his chest. I had absolutely no intentions of completely melting into his embrace, but that's exactly what happened.

His arms tightened against my waist pulling me closer. I sighed one of those fully contented sighs. Being in his arms made everything alright.

I had a hard time getting to sleep last night. The thought of me and Phoenix had my brain going into overload. Whenever I thought about it, I got this funny feeling in my tummy. It was an anxious feeling. ‘No stop. Stop this crazy thinking Summer. Get it out of your head RIGHT NOW!!’ I silently shouted at myself, even though it did no good. Remember I’m not that good at taking orders from people, even if it is myself. So of course my mind did exactly that, and even though it pains me to admit it, I got a little excited over the idea that me and Phoenix could be something. I know this is impossible though. But it was just the way it felt to be held in his arms, that’s what’s got me thinking. This was no ordinary hug. Nope, this was like an electrified version. All tingly and shocking. It felt good. Make that great.

Eventually I fell asleep with thoughts of Phoenix floating around in my head. As soon as I fell into unconsciousness he slipped into my dreams silently, but automatically brightening my thoughts.

The sun woke me up that afternoon, yes I said afternoon. It’s frigging 2 o’clock already! Lucky I don’t have to work today. I checked my phone and saw a message from one of my other best friends. Her name is Sarah. I guess it’s weird that I haven’t mentioned her, but the thing is, I haven’t seen her or heard from her since school ended.

Summer: Hey.

Sarah:) : What’s up?

Summer: Of nothing much.

Sarah:) : Oh well want to hang out today?

Summer: Sure!! What do you want to do?

Sarah:) : Mmkay. Just me and you though right? No one else.

Summer: Ohh, okay.

Sarah:) : No problem right?

Summer: Of course not! Just give me the deets. : p

Sarah:) : Okay meet me at the park around 4ish.

Summer: Got it. See ya!

Sarah:) : Ciao.

I wasn’t really surprised when she wanted, just the two of us to hang out. In the past her and Jade have had some spats...
