Chapter 7 - Sickness

It was the next day in the morning. Katie woke up and found a note taped on the wood of the bed and a rose on Nick's pillow.

"Good morning sleepyhead, there's no school today, so I thought I could show you around. I don't know, hang out, there's another place I would like to show you. I go there all the time maybe we can go there today, well I'm downstairs waiting for you..."

Katie got up and didn't even think about changing. She went down and saw the whole family sitting down in the living room. Katie turned red. "Hey, Nick is out waiting for you, he's been there since 10." Ben said. Ben is Nick's older brother, who is a hottie. "What time is it?" Katie asked trying to make a conversation with him. She couldn't resist he was a hottie. "It's like 2 pm." Ben told her. "Damn, no one bothered to wake me up, I never sleep this late." She said in a joking way. He laughed. Crystal was just giving her dirty looks. Katie ignored and just went out.

"Good morning." Nick said. "I think you mean good afternoon." She said. Nick smiled. She sat on the swing chair next to him. "So... what do you have in plan for us to do today?" Katie asked. "Actually, I forgot I have work today." Nick replied. Katie took seconds to think of what to say. "Ooh yeah I forgot, too. I have unfinished business, I have to finish them, oh well I guess next time we will hang out." Katie said. "Will huh?" Nick said in an angry voice. Katie rubbed her lips together. "No... I need to... clean my mother's stuff... I'm selling the house." She said trying to look like she isn't lying.

Nick got off the chair. "Well Katie I'm sorry I would like to reschedule the meetings I have, but I rescheduled them last week for my uncle's wedding, I can't reschedule again." Nick said. "No, it's okay I need to leave anyway." Katie said adding a smile at the end. Crystal came out with her dirty faces to Katie. "My brother wants you Katie." Crystal said. Katie got up. "Nick, I wanted to ask you, what's your job? Why do you have a job you're still in 12th grade." Katie said as she was walking to the front door. "I own a company, I have my own business, I work so I can pay the bills... who else do you think can pay them?" Nick said. "Your dad?" Katie told him. "Yeah, I never heard of ghost who have jobs." Nick said in a joking way. Katie felt so sorry she didn't know Nick's dad is dead.

"Katie I'm going to go out today so not trying to say this in a rude way, but I need to take you home now." Ben told her. "Mmm, okay let me just get dressed." Katie said. Katie got ready in 5 minutes. Ben thought in his mind 'Damn this girls hot.' Katie looked at Nick and smiled. "I'll see you later." Nick said. She nodded. She got out of the house and got in the car with Ben. Nick went to Katie's window. "You actually thought I would let you go without me doing this?" Nick said. He gave her a kiss. Ben began to drive. "So where do you live?" Ben asked. "Stalker much?" Katie said as a joking way. "Hey, I'm just doing my job." Ben continued the joke. Katie laughed. "You're pretty funny, all the people I say that to get crazy, you get me... I like that." She said. Ben looked at her. "Watch the road, I'm too young to die." Katie screamed. "Sorry." Ben apologized. Katie turned on the radio and heard 'love you like a love song - Selena'. She loved that song, she called it one of her favorite songs. She began to sing along.

"You have an amazing voice." Ben said. "Don't act like you don't know how to sing." Katie said. "I love you like a love song baby." Ben sang. "See your good." Katie smiled. "I had voice lessons." Ben said. Katie began to think. "We're having this talent show, and I would like you to be my partner." Katie said. Ben was shocked. "Are you sure you want me to be your partner?" Ben asked. Katie nodded. "There's my house." She added. "Then I'm your partner." He said as he parked. "We'll talk more about this?" She asked. He nodded and said, "Do you have your cell phone?" She pulled it out of her bag and gave it to him. He put his number in the contact list. "My name's Benjamin." He said. She got out of the car and said, "Thanks." He drove away.

Katie was going to go in the house but she heard her name. She looked to Will's house. He was out. He ran to her. "Where did you sleep yesterday? I was waiting for you." He asked. Katie gulped. "Nick's house didn't you?" Nick began to scream. "It was late." She told him. He shook his head. "Why do you care, I thought we're broken up." She began to shout back at him. "No, I love you Katie." Will told her. She unlocked the door and opened it. "We're over Will, as much as I hate those three words but Will I noticed something yesterday when me and Nick were out on date. I noticed if you really cared about me you would have stopped me going with him, or you would have said something about it. But you didn't instead you just slammed the door, yesterday Nick did something special that you didn't do."

Katie began to cry as she was talking. "What he slept with you?" Will said with anger, he didn't know what he was saying. She slapped him. "No, he made me forget everything in the past, my mother's death, everything, he made me feel alive, and he made me keep my smile all day from 8 until 2 in the afternoon, and I'm crying and I still have that smile he made me have." Katie said. Will looked down not knowing what to say. "William I loved you for who you are but now I see you love me for how I look if I didn't have that outfit yesterday you wouldn't have texted me, and I know what you're thinking of right now, and I can answer you, no I'm not dating Nick I don't know who I love anymore, but William, thanks." Katie said. She went in and locked the door. She began to cry. She threw everything to the ground, she jumped up and down, she even broke her bathroom mirror with her fist making herself bleed. After she saw the blood she calmed down. She ran to her first aid kit and bandaged it. She began to pack her stuff in suitcases.

***After 2 Hours***

Ding dong, Ding Dong. Katie went to answer it. It was Will. "Katie I can't let you go." He said. Katie looked at his eyes they were red. "Have you been crying?" She asked. He looked down. "You can't leave like that," He said with tears coming down. Katie didn't know what to say." Did our love story mean nothing to you? Our first kiss? Our memories?" He asked. "No, they mean the world to me." She said crying. He said, "Tell me what's wrong." Katie all of a sudden falls on the floor. He thought to himself she faints a lot. He decides to take her to the hospital.

***After the Doctor Checks Her***

"I have good news and bad news." The doctor said. "Give me the bad news." Will says. "I'm afraid to tell you this son but Katie Green has a tumor." The doctor said. Will looked at Katie and said, "You're lying." The doctor shook his head. "I'm sorry she has brain cancer." The doctor let it out. Will began to cry. "How long does she have? Did she know?" Will asked. "Yes, she came several times for treatment but then all of a sudden she stopped." The doctor said. "What's the good news?" Will asked. "She has 2 months to live, the tumor spread if we give her surgery it will get worse, she's gonna have to fight." The doctor said. "That's not good news." Will said.

Will went to Katie and sat down holding her hand. She whispered, "Hey." Will wiped his tears. "You didn't tell me... why?" He asked. "I didn't want you to get scared." She said. "We're going to fight it together." He told her. "Can you do me a favor? Or maybe two favors?" She asked. "Anything honey." Will said. "Can you take my wig off and mmm don't act different with me, so I have cancer so what." She said. He nodded. He saw she was bald. He kissed her head. "I want to go home." She cried.

He shook his head. "You're here to fight to get better." He said. "I have been fighting since last year, I had enough." She told him. "Doctor!" She screamed. "Yes?" The doctor asked. "I want to live the rest of my life, get me out of here." She said with all the confidence she had. "Are you sure?" The doctor asked. Will butt in, "No she's going to say." Katie shook her head. She got up and got dressed. Will sat on her bed not knowing what to do. He heard her throwing up in the bathroom. He ran to her. "You're staying." He said. She got up wiped her mouth and said, "You wish." He got out of the bathroom and sat on the bed again. She got out. "I can't lose someone I love again for my mistake." William cried. "Again?" Katie asked. "I loved someone before I met you, her name's Ashley, we dated for three years, I was going to ask her to marry me, can you believe that? The day I was going to ask her she died. "Will had tears coming down his face." I'm not going to be that girl to leave you." She said wiping his tears. "Promise me, you'll fight with everything you got." He told her. "I promise." Katie said. They kissed.

***Back at Will's House***

Nick was there. "Nick, I need to talk to you." Katie said. Nick got up and went to the front yard." It's him isn't it." He said. "No, I felt something yesterday with us but something happened and now I can't leave him." She said. "What happened?" Nick asked. "He found out something I was trying to hide from everyone." She said. "Even me?" He asked. She nodded. "What's that?" He asked. "I have..." Katie couldn't say it. "Have what?" Nick got worried. "Cancer, brain cancer... I have two months to live, I don't want to die, I don't... too much happened to me... Nick... I can't handle this..." She cried. Nick was shocked but he wanted to be by her side. He went and hugged her. She wrapped her arms around his back and just cried. "Hey, don't cry, you're better than that, you're strong, you're perfect, don't... don't worry." He said trying to make her feel better. "Will you be there every second?" She asked." I'm here aren't I?" He said. Will saw them from the window. He noticed that Katie was happier with him. Katie went back in and went straight for bed she had no more power. The sickness began from now.

***After Hours***

Ben called. "Hey Ben." Katie said. "I picked you a song." He said straight out. "What's it called." She asked. "It's from Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri that will be your solo song. And your partner song will be Love the way you lie." He said. "Okay, I love those songs." She said. "One more thing Nick is your new partner, bye." He hanged up. She slept right after and had the biggest smile on her face.
