A Soldiers Tear
Terry was remodeling his house and found a secret door...
While sitting there in the middle of the room with his legs crossed, Terry stared straight ahead with a look of confusion on his face; He's been faithfully remodeling his soon-to-be new office until he discovered an old discolored oak door with a rustic looking door handle. He came upon this door hidden in-between the inner and outer wall behind the plaster and lattice, to the right of the kitchen.
While he sat there all alone, he just stared at the door that is no longer hidden with the utmost mysterious, inexplicable eyes, contemplating its existence on this plain. While in a mystified trance he heard a faint but subtle knock coming from the other side of the door. Slowly rising to his feet, he leaned in with his head and broad shoulders, and then decided to take a half a step towards the door to make sure he heard what he thought he heard. Unsure of himself, he took another step towards the unusual place for a door to be, and then heard another light knock coming from the other side.
His nervous breathing was starting to wear on him, is hands started to lightly shake uncontrollably, taking another step closer, all was quiet, except the creaking of the wooden floor beneath his feet and the beating of his heart. Then he heard it again, but this time it was louder, "Thump, thump... Thump, thump!" But still, he kept taking little baby steps towards the door; he felt it pulling him closer and closer to an irreversible fate.
Terry found himself standing in front of the door, not knowing exactly how he arrived there and not wanting to either! He placed his shaky hand on the rustic handle and felt the urge of wanting to open it up, trying to hold back the temptation; he felt his hand turning the knob. As the door gave way from the latch, he slowly opened it up and felt a warm breeze gently hitting him in the face; he started to gag because of the vulgar odor bellowing from the other side, it smelled like a decomposing corpse and flesh burning.
Nervously he peered around the door to see what was on the other side, as he looked in; he saw only darkness... darkness he could not penetrate with his eyes.
Still hacking and gagging he raised his arm up and touched the darkness, he thought it felt the heavy, something from within reached out and grabbed his forearm and started pulling him into the depths of the unseen, trying to pull his arm back, it gave him excruciating pain, and it shot through his arm and up to his chest. The pulling and tugging became worse; trying to hold on, Terry felt himself being sucked into the vast darkness, and it felt like his arm was being torn off, he started to scream in agony.
"Sergeant Davis! Sergeant Terry Davis!"Daze and confused, he looked around trying to understand what was happening, he kept hearing his name being called out, unsure of what was going on he grabbed for the door, but felt nothing.
"Sergeant Davis... are you alright? Can you hear me?" the medic asked. "Your Humvee ran over a road side bomb Sergeant... I'm sorry, but you lost your left arm. We stopped the bleeding the best we could, but we still need to get you evac!"
Looking around, he noticed solders running about barking orders, trying to secure the area. Some of the soldiers were pulling people from in and around the smoldering Humvee, others were covering bodies with a tarp, not being able to hold his head up anymore, Terry lay back down and then tears started to swell up within his eyes, trying not to show emotion he starred at the bright blue sky dreaming of a better place to be.
The Medic leaned in towards Terry and put his left hand on his right shoulder and said, "It's okay Sergeant, Soldiers need to cry too!" then gave him a shot of morphine for the pain. Terry's eyes were becoming heavy, reaching for the medic, he pulled him in close, "Don't let me go, please God don't let me go back!" Drifting, terry closed his eyes and then reopened them, he was now standing in front of the open door, and without warning he was yanked into the darkness, and the last thing he heard was the echo of his screams.
