A Painful Lullaby

This poem is about a girl suffering from her own mother's cancer.
A Painful Lullaby
It is as though I can’t breathe.
It stings as I lay here in this room,
Knowing that out there she is dying.
Since I found out I’ve been a storm.
Raindrops fall from my eyes, the clouds.
Thunder rolls in reply to the lightning I fight off.
Memories of her laughter and smile haunt.
All they are now are lies and ghosts.
A shadow in my mind I hate to have.

A melody in the distance is playing.
I find myself humming a long.
The voice a sweet tone with perfect pitch.
More raindrops form and release themselves.
I close my eyes to realize I am falling.
Falling into sleep,
Just like my mother is at the time.
Damn cancer just takes her away from me each day.

As the painful lullaby continues,
She dies, and I fall.
