A Mi Señor
"A Mi Señor" is Spanish for "to my Lord." This poem is inspired by the poet Gerard M. Hopkins, SJ, though I don't write in sprung rhythm. I'm not Spanish, but neither was John Keats French when he wrote "La Belle Dame Sans Merci."
Thou, my Lord and Savior Christ, art powerful and true,
All things on earth and heaven high give all glory to You,
All kings and queens are only sovereigns who are earthly
Their mighty deeds can never get them comparèd with Thee.
Which king can ever order earth to put on coats of green,
Or lord can ever, ever make the tallest mount you've seen?
No king, save Christ the King, I say,
Can make things in that way.
Everything we see on earth
In Him have had their birth.
For life and love, for moon and sun,
Give glory to the Son.
All praise to Him for dappled things,
For grass and ground and dainty wings,
For women kind and good-willed men,
Give praise to Him. Amen.
Amen.
