A Love Beneath

Okay, Listen guys. It kinda has a part which sounds like "Moonlight Vow" But I wrote this before, and never expected to post it. So give me a break.
"Guess what," I squeaked. I stood in front of my small group of outcast girls. I felt my eyes light up. Despite the fact that people flooded the halls I knew my voice was loud enough to be heard inside the tight circle that was crammed to the side of the hallway. "Tyler Davis asked me out to the dance tomorrow night," I said proudly.
The reaction I got was just as I pictured it. Their eyes bulged and their jaws hung open. Tyler is captain of the lacrosse team and every teenage girl's dream. He's the perfect "jock" image; buzzed hair, extreme muscular build, and an attitude that makes him act like he's better than every guy, and irresistible to every girl. He could have any girl he wanted. Which is why I was battered with annoying questions. An angry grunt came from outside the conversation that I realized I wasn't even part of anymore.

"Congrats, Emma." A figure stepped into our group so he could be seen. "You're not only annoying, you're also an idiot," he said ignorantly.
"Whatever, Cameron," I snorted "I don't see how it's my fault the most popular guy in school asked me to the dance."
I noticed only my friends Amanda and Sam were left from the group, and we now stood in a deserted hallway. My two friends listened intently and Cameron's eyes flickered between them as if just noticing that we weren't alone. Then his eyes rested on me with the same annoyed expression plastered on his face.
"You do know that he only cares about one thing. He's a player on and off the field." His voice sounded sincere but I couldn't help but feel frustrated that he had ruined my five minutes of glory.

"Oh really? As far as I'm concerned he's a better person than you," I snapped. We all flinched, and I almost regretted being so harsh. Almost. Cameron instantly recovered like he wasn't even affected by my words.
"I doubt that," he sneered. I rolled my eyes, but secretly I was glad I hadn't hurt him too badly.
"Why do you care so much?" I asked, hiding a hint of a hopeful smile behind my lips. His eyes looked vulnerable for a moment before he broke our gaze by looking at the floor and mumbled "as if I would" under his breath. Then he swiftly stepped around me and left without another word. I ground my teeth in frustration. Sam and Amanda stood in awe of the drama.
Finally, Amanda spoke from the silence. "You're so hooked on him." She smiled and left with Sam before I had time to protest.

The day seemed to pass slowly. I couldn't help but blame Cameron. Ever since I started high school we had always teased each other. I hated how he just assumed things like that. The final bell split my concentrated thoughts, and I scrambled to get my stuff together. I hastily made my way towards the gymnasium where the dance was being held tomorrow. Violently swinging the doors open, I bellowed "let's get started!" The rest of the student council looked up from their conversation and smiled at me.
"What's first, Miss President?" a male voice called out.
We had decided on a "Royal Ball" theme earlier in the week. So we decorated the Gym to appear as an elegant ballroom dance floor. We stacked plastic wine glasses in the shape of a pyramid, scattered fake rose petals across the floor, and placed candles around the room. We finished by setting the lights and testing them. It took about three hours, but we were satisfied and completely impressed with ourselves.

I envied everybody that got a ride a ride home after meetings while I had to walk. On this particular night the wind was dead enough the flag outside the school barely moved. Even though it was dark outside, it was easy finding the patch of flowers that grew in front of two evenly spaced trees that marked the path that lead straight to my house.
I hadn't been walking long before I heard a snap in the brush behind me. Instantly, I went into terror mode, completely aware of my surroundings. Footsteps started in my direction. I took off running full speed, but realized I was still being followed. My home was nearby, perched nicely in a sea of light. I had confidence

I could make it. I only needed to outrun them a little longer. Just as the thought crossed my mind, a body leapt ahead of me. I forced my legs to an immediate stop.
Sliding forward, my arms were caught in a vice grip hold. I frantically tried to scream but a large hand was slapped down on my mouth.
"God Emma, calm down!" An annoyed voice yelled. The voice was familiar; I quickly made out the face in the darkness. I didn't speak. So, he calmly whispered my name with concern.
"You're a jerk Cameron."
"I needed to tell you not to go to the dance with the lacrosse loser," he said, with a fake smile.

"So you followed me? It's not any of your business who I go with. You don't care, so..." I paused to think of where I was going with this, when a pair of lips came down on mine. It was like an out-of-body experience. I floated above and watched myself, with Cameron.
He finally broke away and repeated, "Don't go with Tyler." I smiled and he looked puzzled.
"I never said I was going with him, I said no because I like this..." I pulled him closer. "Really annoying guy." Finally saying this I let out a cage of feelings I've always had. I guess we both have a thing for love/hate relationships.
