A Guide to the Best Hamams in Istanbul
Visiting a hamam, or Turkish bath, while backpacking in the Turkish city of Istanbul is something of a rite of passage. Hamams enjoyed their heyday in the 18th century, but fortunately for travelers, the most prolific baths are still operational today.
Cagaloglu Hamami
This 300-year-old bath is one of the original hamams and is one of the most highly recommended places to take a relaxing dip in the city. Famed for its stunning white marble steam room, Cagaloglu Hamami has been graced by many illustrious ancient names, which some claim include Kaiser Wilhelm and Florence Nightingale.
Cagologlu is believed to have been a gift from Sultan Mehmet I in the 18th century, and its well-preserved interior and fine rooms outclass even the most luxurious Istanbul hostels and ensure even backpacker visiting the city can enjoy a dash of Turkey’s former elegance in modern times.
Cemberlitas Hamami
Situated next to some of Istanbul's most famous monuments on Cemberlitas Square, this hamam more than holds its own in the midst of its historical neighbors and is thought to have been constructed as early as 1584.
Its location also means that it's convenient for travelers staying in Istanbul hostels located in the vicinity. Its multi-domed roof provides the baths main source of light through a series of glass-eye windows that direct light over the unique heated central platform in the hot room, which is reached by bathers once they have passed through a transitional warm area.
Tarihi Galatasaray Hamami
While its varying hours for men and women can make it somewhat confusing for traveling couples, excellent customer service is the overriding feature of this popular hamam.
Visitors are treated to the upmost in pampering at this bath, where delicate attention is paid to every stage of the process, from the initial heated platform massage, through the bubble bath to the drink service and final wind-down session.
