A Good Doctor

What does it mean to be a good doctor? Is it enough to make a right diagnosis, or does it involve more than that?..
A doctor, by general definition, means a person qualified to treat people's diseases, specifically body issues. A doctor in the making is being taught everything about the aspects of the human body, and to graduate he has to be expert in the domain he chooses.

Patience
The majority of the people who finish the Medical school excel in treating an illness (and this is an essential and vital attribute of a doctor) , but even so the patients are complaining. And why would that be? In many cases it occurs because the doctor doesn't take time to explain what's going wrong in a manner that the patient would understand. Consequently, the patient remains with the medical prescription and a lot of questions, doubts, and maybe fears. Therefore this eventually determines the patient to lose his motivation in following the treatment and to lose his confidence in the doctor. The problem could be prevented, if the doctor would have the patience to listen to the queries of the ill person and explain in appropriate words what isn't working well in the body.

In some situations we can't blame the doctor. For example a person who manifests a little fever and a headache walks into the emergency room. He goes on and on confessing his fear, his possible diseases and insistently asks for elaborated analysis. Ten other people with severe injuries are waiting anxiously their turn. What should be done in this case? The answer it is quite obvious. What was the patient's mistake? He didn't confront the appropriate doctor. For example, a family doctor would have had more time for his consultation.

Compassion
Besides patience, a good doctor should also have compassion for the suffering patient. Knowing that someone understands your problems and cares for you immediately makes you feel better. This is the way we are made, and a doctor (and everybody else) makes a big mistake if he/she ignores this part. Mind and soul are also implied in the disease more than we tend to admit or more than we are able to imagine. It is known that patients with positive and grateful attitude about life get over the illness more easily. The thing that gives people power to be positive and grateful is love - being loved and giving love.
The motivation that stands behind the individual who wants to become a doctor is also essential. A doctor led by humanitarian reasons will succeed in showing love and compassion. Being really interested in the process of healing somebody would come hard to a person who became a doctor just because he wanted a high social position, power and a good income.

Honesty
Honesty is another attribute that a good doctor should have. The doctor has to be honest firstly with himself, accepting his limits (but not resign in front of them, always trying to make his best), and, secondly, with the patient by telling him only what he knows for sure. When he has doubts concerning the diagnosis, he should give the advice after he informs himself. If he still isn't sure, he should ignore his pride and pass the case to a more qualified doctor.

Hope
Giving hope it is also a very important thing a doctor should offer. Not a false hope but the belief that everything is not lost, that even if there is only one chance in a million to be healed, still that chance exists.

Humor
Making the patient smile is another valuable attribute. Not everybody has the sense of humor, so we can't expect that every doctor should possess it, but if he has it, he could do great things with his gift. A good example is Patch Adams, the doctor who decided to help patients by encouraging and giving them the opportunity to laugh. He says humor is essential to the emotional and physical health.

In conclusion a good doctor has to be firstly well-trained and informed about the specialty he has chosen ( it would be ideal to have large area of knowledge, that goes beyond his domain) , to also to be a righteous person, motivated by helping people, being caring , compassionate, honest, devoted to the job he practices, always following the patient's good.
