Laurence held me tight in his arms.

"What are you doing dear?" He asked, laughing and tossing my hair playfully.

"Don’t distract me!" I laughed with him, "Don’t you want your dinner?"

"I just want to have you for dinner," he whispered in my ears. I looked at him, and my face felt hot all over, "oh never mind," he said hastily, "I was just joking around, you know."

"Right," I turned toward my cake mix, "try this," I said, sticking a large chunk of frosting in his mouth, "how’s this?"

He looked thoughtful for a moment, savoring the flavor, "It tastes pretty good."

"Really?" I asked, taking a chunk for myself. I almost choked on it.

"You said it was good!" I said accusingly.

"It did taste pretty good to me," he smiled.

"But…but I must have mixed up salt with sugar again!" I wailed, "Oh I’m completely hopeless! I’m going to start again…"

"There is no need, babe," he grabbed my wrists, "I love the frosting, as long as if it’s made by you."

I blushed and rested my head on his muscled chest. We stayed there for a long time in silence.

"Laurence…"

"Yes?"

"I love you," I whispered quickly, turning brick red at my own sappiness.

"Me too," he kissed the top of my head and stuffed a large chunk of my disgusting frosting in his mouth.

He didn’t even make a face.

I’m daydreaming again. At least this is not a crime in this world of stupid rules and laws.

"This is hard work," I whispered to Emma.

"You think?" she said, climbing on top of the ladder to dust off the edge of the window panel.

"Be careful," I warned her.

"Don’t worry about me," she laughed, "I’m used to this kind of work."

I sighed, "Well, at least this is not work in the kitchen. I would be killed within seconds."

She laughed, "I’m sure you are not that bad."

"Oh, you have never tasted my cooking, Emma. There is only one person in the world who has the ability to stomach it."

"Is that right?" she laughed, "and who might that person be?"

"Oh, it’s Laurence," I tried to put on a brave face, but I failed miserably, "he…he was the only one, who…who could ever tolerate my faults." I managed to choke out.

Emma averted my eyes and let me have my time alone.

I felt so lonely without him. He was my world. The only one I love and the only one I’ll ever love. How am I supposed to live here without seeing him? Will that painful ache in my chest ever go away? I felt a renewed surge of hate for Asmodeus.

I hate him. I thought fervently. I hate him to death.

"At least I don’t have to worry about cooking over here," I said bitterly, "the vampires seem to like me just the way I am."

I thought that she was going to scold me again, but instead, she laughed. That laugh. I haven’t heard a single laughter for ages…I was so happy to hear it again that I had to laugh too.

"Don’t you know the rules?"

Emma froze in mid laughter. I jumped about a foot in the air. Behind me came the low hissing of Lord Asmodeus.

"There shall never be any laughter in hell," Lord Asmodeus gazed at me with his dark blue eyes, "that is the rule."

Emma automatically bowed, "Yes Lord Asmodeus." I saw from the corners of my eyes that she tugged at Talia’s sleeves. She looked at me defiantly and reluctantly and angrily bent into a very small bow.

Behind Lord Asmodeus was another vampire. He had light brown hair and bronze eyes. He looked at me with hunger lurking in his eyes. I evaded his gaze.

"You," Lord Asmodeus addressed Emma, "please give your friend a little lesson on common sense. I don’t think she was born with any, or else, she would bow in the presence of her king."

I scowled at him. He returned it with his arrogant little smirk that fit surprisingly well on his angelic face.

He walked close to my face and breathed in my ears in his velvety low voice, "Don’t frown, darling. That look doesn’t suit your beautiful face."

He stroked my cheeks gently with his filthy vampire clays. I can feel the shiver running down my spine. He moved closer and I snapped.

"Get away from me, you monster," I snarled.

"You are really frustrating for a mere mortal, you know that, right?" Lord Asmodeus walked behind me, the tips of his fingers barely brushing against my skin, "Let us go Aaron," he addressed his companion, "Let the little slaves go about their bidding."

"She sure smells good," his companion said with his up to no good smile.

I froze. Asmodeus’ eyes suddenly darkened.

I saw fear creeping into his companions eyes as he flinched at the sudden virociousness in the death god's eyes.

"Don’t even think about it Aaron," he snarled. His voice was frightfully cold, "Or I’ll throw you in the fire pits."

"Very touching," I snarled after him, "and is this supposed to move me into submitting to you? Nice try Lord Asmodeus, that touchy feely stuff doesn’t work with me."

"Watch how you are talking to your master Talia. Someday, I might slip up and accidentally send your beloved boyfriend to hell."

With that, he disappeared before I could say another word.

"What do you think you were doing, Talia?" Emma demanded after they were long gone, "He could have killed you on the spot for your insolence."

"I don’t care," I replied, "he is a monster."

"Aren’t they all?" Emma snorted. She stopped her work and looked at me with her sincere eyes, "but actually, Lord Asmodeus is much better than most."

"Really? Excuse me for being blind," I said sarcastically, "Why are you defending him anyways?"

"From the way he treated you," she said, "you have no experience in this world, but I have had plenty. If it were with any other death gods, or even regular vampires, you would have been killed instantly. Humans just can’t treat vampires like that. They are the masters, and you are the servants, and servants certainly do not treat masters like that."

I shrugged, "you have no idea how he really treats me."

"They are blood sucking death gods," Emma said, "What did you expect? You are not exactly in heaven, so be grateful that you are still alive after that insolence."

"It doesn’t matter, Emma. I can’t help myself. Every time he comes near me, I just want to hurt him. It’s like reflex! I hate him. It’s all his fault that I’m here. I really hate him."

She shook her head sadly.

"You sound just like a child." I made a face at her and smiled. "That doesn’t matter, he is still your master. Just think of your Laurence. If you really hate Lord Asmodeus this much, think about someone you love. Maybe for his sake then you can pretend to have some respect for his highness. You can be submerged in hate, my dear. It will consume you alive in a place like this."

"Yes, it’ll be a long shot, but I’ll try."

Yes, for Laurence, I’ll be able to do anything, anything at all, because I love him, more than anything in the world.

"Good," Emma said, "I don’t think your mother would ever forgive me if you were killed before you are freed from your ties."

"I’ll try not to give you any hard time, Emma."

"That’s a good girl."

I laughed. But my laughter was cut short. I suddenly felt a cold pair of hands around my shoulders.
"Get away from me," I snapped. That Asmodeus. Can he ever leave me alone?

"That’s no way to speak to your superiors," a singsong voice chuckled. I looked up.

It was not Asmodeus.

My blood ran cold. I looked up to the face of a tall, dark and handsome vampire. His scent was much stronger than Asmodeus’ and his face was even more angular than Asmodeus’, with sharp, protruding cheekbones and prominent chin. There was no humor in his face. His eyes were dark and hard. This one meant business.

"I have heard that Lord Asmodeus has just obtained a beautiful young mortal, but I had no idea that he couldn’t even tame it." I felt his cold fingers tracing down the line of my neck.

"Leave me," my voice was squeaky and wavering. I know that there is no point at all in struggling. This one will only find amusement in it.

He ignored me completely, and held my neck steadily with his stony fingers, "Well, I guess I’ll just have to tame you for him, am I right, my sweet?"
