The sliding doors slammed open and Ruby's and Braiden's heads snapped up to face the shadowy presence that stared back at them. Braiden squinted and then his eyes widened.
"Shit!" he whispered. Confused, Ruby clapped and the overhead lights clicked on. They blinked against the glare for a second. Standing in front of them was a girl who looked to be around their age. She was wearing jeggings, a granddad shirt and heels. She was really pretty with her corkscrew curls, hooded eyes and thin lips. She was also really pissed off.
"Yeah, Braiden! I guess playing tonsil tennis with the birthday slut is the break you really need!" she hissed. Ruby jumped up.
"Excuse me?!" she shouted. The girl ignored her.
Braiden sighed and closed his eyes. When he opened them again, Ruby was watching him suspiciously and his ex was glaring at him.
"Look Zee -"
"You don't get to call me Zee anymore" she cut him off, rather childishly he thought.
"Okay, Zelda" Braiden didn't know what to say. He really didn't.
"I don't really want your excuses Braiden. I just came to tell your new doormat something" she smirked.
Panic rose in his eyes and he turned to talk to Ruby who was standing, watching with distrust plastered all over her face.
Zelda pushed Braiden backwards onto the deck chair and pulled Ruby back into the house; shutting the sliding doors and locking them. Ruby was shocked but didn't try to let him in when he called to her. She wanted to hear what this strange girl had to say. She folded her arms and raised a brow.
"I'm all ears" she swallowed, wondering what was so important.
Zelda studied Ruby for a moment.
"You're pretty. Sexy even. You're exactly his type. I just wanna warn you though. He has 'problems' with commitment. And I bet he hasn't told you about the Kai case, right?" she asked. Ruby shook her head.
"Of course not. Ask him about it. Don't take no for an answer. If you're gonna do this, you need to know everything. I was the only girl who accepted him for it. And seeing as I've been....dumped...you're my replacement. Let's see how you deal with it" she said, her voice betraying just exactly how upset she was. Ruby felt like screaming.
What was going on here? And why did it sound like Braiden had done something that Ruby wasn't sure she wanted to know about? She breathed deeply.
"Okay. Look. I'm sorry about all this. Can you just please tell me...did he break up with you before you found us together?" she wanted to know.
Zelda gave her a pitying look.
"Yes. He wouldn't cheat. He's not heartless. Just lost. A lost little boy playing at grown up" she smiled sadly and turned to leave.
Ruby reached out and caught her arm.
"Wait!" she murmured.
"What?"
"Where did you come from? Did I invite you here?"
"I live about five hours away from here. And no, you didn't invite me. A friend of mine was though, and I decided to tag along. It was by pure chance that I saw you two in your little clinch".
Ruby nodded, took the keys for the doors, and watched her leave. She was shaken. It was obvious. She unlocked the doors and found Braiden on the deck chairs, his head in his hands.
He looked up at her and froze.
"I think you and I need to talk Braiden. What's the Kai case?" she said outright, placing her hands on her hips.
He swallowed visibly and blanched. That was not a good sign. He looked everywhere but into her eyes. Ruby suddenly felt drained of all energy, and very very frightened. There was also anger bubbling somewhere under the surface of her emotions.
"Braiden," she whispered, pulling his anguished, tortured gaze back to hers with the soft desperation in her voice ", Please".
She had to know.
