A Dirty Game - Chapter Nineteen

Not as exciting.. =]
I won't waste time with excuses; I know you don't want to hear them. But I will say one thing. Exams. Enjoy! :D

"Honey, come and look at this" James called, his voice excited. Mary Jane unfolded her legs from the sofa and joined him at the window. She gasped and clutched at his arm, a grin curling her lips.

"Oh, I told you she was good for him" she simpered. They watched through the net curtains as Braiden and Ruby stared at each other, curled up together under the moonlight. Mary Jane felt excited on the behalf of her son, but she knew that she and James were snooping. Reluctantly, she turned and looked at James, loosening his grip on the curtain.
"Aww, c'mon. It's cute, let's just watch for like, another minute" he pleaded like a little boy. She laughed and started walking forward, pushing on his chest so that he was moving backwards. He made puppy dog eyes at her, trapping her hand against his chest.
"No."
"Please!"
"No!"
"You would if you loved me" he whined, folding his arms and pouting. Mary Jane rolled her eyes but found that she couldn't keep the frown on her face.

"Okay, but only another minute" she gave in, and they ran to the window, ducking down and giggling like children.

"I think I love you."
Braiden stared at her, unable to process what she'd just said. Had she really just...
She loved him?
As in, loved him?
His heart started racing even harder, and his mouth was suddenly dry. He placed his hands over hers, still incapable of responding.

Ruby bit her lip, worried. She shouldn't have just blurted it out like that. His hands were warm against hers, and her skin tingled. She felt like she was melting, and even though it was about 15 degrees outside, her body was on fire. She couldn't decipher the look in his eyes and she was sick of trying to because to be honest, she just didn't have the energy. Nervous, she closed her eyes and rested her forehead against his.
Was he going to answer...at all?

"Ruby, do you mean that?" he asked, watching as her eyes flew open. He knew how hard it must have been for her to say something so emotional and strong. She didn't believe in vulnerability, and she'd made that clear several times. Yet, here she was, telling him that she loved him. He was holding back the biggest smile, afraid that it would put Ruby off and make her think he wasn't serious. She took a deep breath.

"I wouldn't have said it, if I didn't mean it" she replied, attempting to lighten the situation. He hadn't said it back and it made her cheeks red with embarrassment. She looked away, focusing on the stars. Why on earth had she said that?!

"Ruby, look at me" he murmured, enfolding her hand in his. She really had no choice but to. He was smiling, happiness radiating from him like the sun was between his teeth.

Apprehension. Damn, but she hated that feeling.

"I love you too."

Her eyes widened.
Did he just say...? She grinned, so glad that he hadn't shot her down.

In between kissing him, she told him to, "Say. That. Again."

"I. Love You" he smiled.

"Told you we should have opened the window" James hissed at Mary Jane, pretending to be angry. She rolled her eyes and shifted, trying to get the blood in her legs to move.

"How long have we been sitting here? I can't feel my legs" she whined, peeking back out the window.

"Good, because of you I don't know what they said" he groaned.
Mary Jane sighed, happy for her the couple outside.

"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to guess what was said" she answered, turning to look at him. His nose was pushed against the window, his breath fogging up the glass. She resisted the urge to push him over; he was so engrossed in Ruby and Braiden that he'd not moved for ten minutes. He felt her eyes on him and turned, raising an eyebrow.

"It's like you're watching a football match" she giggled, covering her mouth.

"Well that would mean I want someone to win, and in this case, I think I'm right in saying we want them to both be winners" he smirked.

He was so right it was unbelievable.

"Were we like that?" she asked, wrapping an arm around James's waist.

"I hope so" he chuckled, turning back to look out the window.

"What'd I miss?" she panicked, following his lead.

Ruby and Braiden were coming up the garden path, holding hands and laughing.

"If we weren't married, I'd kill you. That was like watching Eastenders and you made me miss part of it!" James cried, genuinely emotional about missing out. Mary Jane took one look at his creased brow and started laughing, hard. She stumbled away from the window and collapsed on the sofa, staring at the ceiling as she clutched her stomach.

At that moment Braiden poked his head through the doorway and grinned at her.

"Hey mum can I - why is James on the floor?"

James jumped up and brushed his trousers off.
"Looking for your mother's ear-ring" he muttered, holding in his amusement.

"Riiiight. Anyway, mum can Ruby stay over?" he asked, widening his eyes to look innocent. Mary Jane sat up, tilting her head to the side.

"Repeat that to yourself Braiden. What part of your non-existent brain thought I'd say yes?" she teased him. He came in completely and she saw that he had his jacket on, and his helmet threaded through onto his arm.

"Mum please. We'll go get her stuff and then come back. I'll sleep in here, if you want" he pleaded, putting his hands together. She glanced at James, he just shrugged. She scowled; he was no help at all sometimes.

"Okay. But I want that door open all night, and if I see anything going on, that shouldn't be: you're dead" she sighed. Braiden ran forward and pulled her into a big hug, kissing her cheek repeatedly. She hit at his shoulder until he let go and stood there, looking unbelievably happy.

"Braiden, I'm ready" Ruby called from the stairs. Braiden followed her voice and saw her with her bag slung across her shoulder and her helmet on.

"Great, let's go, she said yes" he told her as he opened the door and chauffeured her outside.
After coming back inside from the garden, Ruby had checked the time and realized that she should leave. Braiden, still in shock from their exchanging of words, had suggested that she just stay over. It was Friday, and they'd had so much fun. He didn't want it to end, and neither did she.

They pulled up at Ruby's house and she ran in, kissing her mum on the cheek, before hurriedly packing a bag. She stopped in front of her mirror, and noticed that she'd never looked as radiant as she did now. Her cheeks were rosy red, her eyes twinkling, and her hair in a disarray that suited the 'adventure' she'd been on that day. She smiled to herself as she changed into some jeans and Vans, pulling on a tank top and her blue cardigan. Grabbing the bag, she skipped down the stairs, two at a time, and slammed into Taylor. He steadied her, amused at her expression.

"Whoah, where are you off to?" he laughed, checking out her bag.
She ran her hand through her hair, shifting her stance.
"Staying at Braiden's" she replied. He raised an eyebrow.

"Well. That's news to me."

"Ask mum" she sighed and pushed past him. She didn't feel right being so apart from Braiden at the moment.

She couldn't believe that she'd said something so...soft. I love you. Mentally, she groaned. That sentence would never have left her lips three months before. Never. Braiden had finally succeeded in making her feel. Strangely, she didn't mind. Because she had someone to love her, that she loved back. There was always the possibility that it would end badly, but for once, she didn't care. If it ended badly, she only had herself to blame. She knew Braiden would never do that to her. It was a silly thing to assume, yes, but she was willing to if it gave her the chance to be happy.

She shut the door behind her and slung the bag over her shoulder, putting the helmet back on. Braiden waited for her to get on the bike before he started the engine. The roads at eleven in the evening were quite sparse of cars and so they returned to Braiden's in about ten minutes.

"This should be fun" he laughed as he opened the door to his room and shucked off his coat. Ruby kicked off her high tops and dropped her bag.

"Oh, very" she smirked before launching herself at him and tackling him to the ground. He shouted out as she got him in a headlock.

"What the?!"

"Remember earlier? How you said my strength is nothing compared to yours?" she chuckled, panting from the strain. He squirmed about, trying to get loose.

"Fine, I was wrong" he cried, giving up. She didn't release her hold on his head.

"Aha, now say I'm the best girl in the world" she smirked, tightening her grip. He groaned.

"You're the best, most beautiful girl in the world. And I love you" he added. Ruby stood up and giggled at his facial expression.

"You're no fun."

"Yeah? Wanna test that out with Midnight Hide and Seek?" he raised an eyebrow.

"Nah, Midnight Tag" she grinned, darting forward and tapping his shoulder.

"It!" she screamed and turned and ran for her life.
