"Fuck Fuck Fuckety fuck fucccccck" she screeched and jumped up.
Braiden looked up.
"What?" he asked, seriously alarmed.
"My booooooots!" she wailed. They were soaked through, she raised a foot and shoved it in front of his nose.
"Just look at them!"
Braiden peered at them and then shrugged.
"So?"
"They're SUEDE! And they cost a FORTUNE!" she cried. Braiden stood up and looked right at her.
"They're just boots. But we need to get off this roof because it's gonna start pissing down" he grabbed her arm and pulled her to the fire exit door. He tugged on the handle, but it wouldn't budge. He tugged on it again.
"It's not opening" Ruby stated.
"No shit Sherlock" he rolled his eyes.
"Well, why is it not opening?" she asked him.
The rain started pouring down.
"I think it only opens from the inside" he muttered.
Ruby glared at him, stomped over to the blanket and wrapped it around herself. Braiden took one look at her and started laughing.
"You look...like...a...yeti!" he gasped.
"Yeah...well you look like a drenched rat" she retorted. The rain was running down his cheeks, plastering his hair to his face. He walked towards her with a mischievous smile.
"You gonna let me in?" he joked. Ruby stepped back.
"Don't come near me! I'm warning you Braiden....If you touch me I'll throw you off the this roof"
Braiden pretended to think about it, then lunged at her.
She started running as fast as she could around the little space there was but because she was laughing so hard nearly slipped on the wet surface. Braiden chased her, chuckling and sliding around like a bad ice skater.
"Stop running!"
"No" Ruby grinned and waved an edge of the blanket at him "Come and get me" she teased.
Braiden tilted his head to the side.
"Fine" he set off after her again.
Ruby turned and her feet slipped. She tried to regain her balance but the rain was pouring down harder than ever and everything was slick with it. She started to fall but then Braiden's arms were around her. She started to say thanks but he slipped too and they landed on the ground in a heap. She was tangled up with the blanket, lying on his chest. Laughing, he rolled over so she was under him, then he pushed up.
Ruby expected him to get up, but he didn't. She sighed.
"Don't even think about it" she warned. He stared at her, smirking.
"Don't you know that kissing in the rain is romantic?" he whispered.
"No, it's not. I'm soaked to the bone and it's cold" she pushed at his shoulders.
Braiden winked and dropped a kiss on her nose.
"That wasn't so bad was it?" he grinned.
"Just get up" Ruby rolled her eyes.
The fire exit door opened. They both looked up. Mr Bell Stood there, breathing heavily, with a thunderous look on his face.
"MY OFFICE NOW!" He roared.
"Uh oh" Ruby murmured.
~*~*~*
"Braiden...you're supposed to be behaving yourself, no?" Mr Bell asked.
"Yeah"
"So why were you up on the out of bounds roof, canoodling with Ruby?"
Braiden suppressed a grin. Ruby buried her face in the big blanket and laughed silently.
"Um... I was just trying to cheer her up...there was no...um...canoodling" he giggled.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"It's totally true" Ruby put in, her shoulders still shaking.
"Ruby, you're mother is on her way" Audrina, Mr Bell's secretary stuck her head in the room.
"What?!" Ruby screeched.
"She rang up and asked if she could take you out of school for the remaining periods and I had to tell her what happened"
"Oh no" Ruby sunk her head into her hands.
Braiden stared at her, confused. Mr Bell stood up.
"Audrina, thank you. Ruby, I'll be glad to finally meet with your mother. Braiden, give me one good reason why I shouldn't call your step-father" he folded his arms. Braiden glared at him, and said nothing.
"Well?"
"Whatever man" Braiden muttered and looked down at his feet.
Mr Bell raised an eyebrow.
"My baby!" came from reception. Ruby groaned.
Lacey rushed in and enveloped her in a hug.
"Are you okay?" she asked. Ruby rolled her eyes.
"Yes mum"
"I knew I shouldn't let you go to school. I knew this would happen sooner or later"
"What?" Ruby asked, confused.
"It's alright. You don't need to explain. I know you're still hurting, and I can't stop you from trying to rid yourself of that pain, but honey, couldn't you have just talked to me?" she searched ruby's face.
Ruby stared and then pushed her mum away, mouth open.
"Oh my god. You think I was gonna commit suicide didn't you?" she whispered aware that the whole room was dead silent. She glanced at Braiden who was looked concerned.
Lacey sobbed and pulled Ruby to her.
"Yes"
"Mum! I was upset, and Braiden was trying to cheer me up!" she protested.
Lacey glared at Braiden.
"By encouraging you to jump?" she said icily.
"No!" Braiden spluttered. Lacey's face relaxed.
"I'm sorry" she muttered and straightened up. She passed a hand over her features.
Ruby closed her eyes. Everyone was staring at her. For the first time in a long time, she felt herself flushing red.
Suddenly she stood up, whispered "Thanks for ruining my life" and ran out.
~*~*~*
The only place she could think of going was to class. So she cleaned herself up in the bathroom, trying to dry herself as best as she could. Then she went to maths. Heads turned as she strode in, shoulders thrown back, even though she felt about ten centimeters tall inside.
"Glad you could join us" the teacher called. Ruby nodded and sat down in the empty chair beside Sacha.
"Hi" she muttered.
"Hey" Sacha replied and filled her in on what she'd missed.
"Thanks"
"You're wet. Did you get caught in the rain?"
"Um, yeah"
"Cool, better than maths" she laughed quietly.
"Definitely" Ruby smiled.
She was feeling so, churned up. She had felt so happy on the roof, messing around and having fun. Slightly annoyed that the rain had interrupted the would-be kiss, but happy. Braiden was fun, and all you could focus on was the atmosphere he brought along with him. She smiled to herself as she recalled him kissing her on the nose. And he had a very interesting past. That had surprised her. And then along came mother. Ruby frowned. She'd said quite a lot, though she hadn't gone in detail. She always ruined everything. And why did she want Ruby anyway? Why did she have to humiliate Ruby in front of Braiden of all people?!
