Chapter Sixteen
Zero and I were sitting on my bed in my room, talking. It was about six at night, I had just gotten back from skating practice, and then my phone buzzed.
It was a text from Christine. It read:
Hey Mia, & me r going to the movies-u wanna come? Zero’s invited, too
Nice! I haven’t gone anywhere in forever! I need some time out of my house and not at work or the store! The movies are perfect.
Zero, protectively, asked, "Who is it?"
"Christine. She wants to know if we want to go to the movies."
"Hmm… I guess we should get out of the house…" he replied.
I was very surprised by his answer. I expected him to say, "No. Jason is out there somewhere and I don’t think the best thing is to bring you somewhere that he could be anywhere or I could loose track of you."
"Really?" I squeaked, excitedly.
"Yeah," he said, half-chuckling at my high-pitched voice.
I smiled, so wide my mouth hurt, but I didn’t care-I was getting out of the claustrophobic house to do something fun-not that hanging out with Zero wasn’t fun, but being under the constant watch of my parents or Stephanie at my house or Lukas, Sarah, or Candace at his wasn’t.
I texted,
Yeah, sure we’ll come. What time?
"Who else is going?" he asked.
"Mia," I replied.
"That’s it?" he asked.
"As far as I know of," I said as my phone buzzed again, signaling another text, "Hold on, I’ll ask."
I flipped open the phone and Christine had said,
At eight. We’re seeing whatever we can find when we get there.
Who else is coming? I sent.
"So, what’re we going to see?" he asked.
I shrugged. "What ever is on at eight at Silver City."
"We’re going to the mall movie theater?" he asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"Just wondering," he replied.
"Ok…?" I replied, "I’m going to go ask my mom if I can go."
"Ok. I’ll be here," he replied.
"You better be," I joked.
I walked out the door and shut it behind me. I went downstairs and heard the faint clicking of the computer-Mom was downstairs at the desk. I went into the living room and she was there sitting at the computer clicking away. She turned to me and smiled.
"What is it, honey?" she asked.
"Can I go to the movies?" I asked.
"With who?"
"Zero and Christine and Mia…"
Then my phone buzzed. I pulled it out of my pocket and looked at the new text from Christine.
Um… Rob’s coming 2 & w/ Aaron & Pat… & Makenzie
That’s okay… Maybe we can all make amends I replied.
"And Rob, Aaron, Pat, and Makenzie," I added, quickly.
I didn’t want to get into trouble with her for leaving out just one person that I was going with-she would get angry.
"Okay, you can go. As long, as you stay together-and if you can’t, at least stay with Zero," she replied.
"Okay!" I said, happily and ran back upstairs, as I entered the second floor hallway, I noticed my door was slightly ajar.
I stepped into my room to find my step-dad standing in front of my bed, in front of Zero, towering over him-Louis seeming angry and Zero seeming shocked.
"What the hell are you doing in here?" Louis boomed.
Zero didn’t reply.
"What? Are you afraid of me? You should have thought about that before you came in my daughter’s room at night!"
"Hey, I’m not your daughter! And why he’s up here isn’t your business!" I yelled at Louis.
He spun around and glared at me, eyes burning like the embers of a fire. "You knew he was up here?!"
"Yeah I did," I stated flatly.
"Julie!" he yelled to my mother, moving around me to stand in the hallway.
I glanced over at Zero, who stood up and came over to me, wrapping his arms around me, tightly, seeming like he would never let me go.
"What is it, Louis?" I heard my mom say behind me.
"I caught this guy sitting on your daughter’s bed!" he yelled, grabbing Zero away from me by the hood of his sweatshirt.
"Hey, I am a person you know!" Zero complained as Louis dragged him away from me so he could face my mother.
"Um, Louis, you do know who this is, right?"
"Yeah, the kid I told her to stay away from! And what does she do? She invites him up to her room-while we are in the house!"
"He always spends the night here or Rose spends the night at his house," my mom replied calmly.
"What? Are you insane?" he yelled.
"No; I just care about the safety of my daughter. Zero protects Rosetta from Jason, you know, the cannibal who is trying to kill her."
For once, Louis had no response. No sarcastic remark. No argument to back himself up again. He knew that when something involved my mother’s children’s safety she didn’t mess around.
"Zero, Rosetta, I’m sorry," my mom said, "Come on Louis, let’s go."
They left us alone in my room, shutting the door behind themselves.
"So… That was… Eventful," Zero chuckled.
"I’m sorry about him… He’s so… Annoying."
"He only cares about you," Zero replied.
I burst out laughing. "Are. You. Serious?" I said between laughs.
"Um… Yeah…? That’s why he got so mad. He’s only trying to be the father you’ve never had."
"Yeah, sure. He just likes getting me in trouble. Can we stop talking about this?" I asked.
"Yeah, I guess."
"So, you still want to go to the movies?" I asked.
"Mhm. Are you ready?"
"Um… I’m in my pajamas, silly; I think I should put clothes on," I said.
"Or not…" he said, seductively.
I felt a deep blush burn in my cheeks and my heart beat quickened with the milliseconds. He gently kissed me on the cheek and whispered, "I’ll be upstairs; come get me when you’re ready to go, okay?"
"S-sure," I replied, my breath getting caught up in my throat.
He chuckled and disappeared into thin air again.
I went into my closet and grabbed my black and blue, chained, Tripp pants and my black, spaghetti-strapped corset that had blue rose designs on it. I put on a blue fishnet shirt underneath the corset, rainbow-colored, knee-high socks, and black platform boots with blue laces. I tied my hair up on the top layer, little pigtails on both sides and the rest of my hair hanging down underneath them. I put on blue eye shadow and black eyeliner. Then I grabbed my blue nail polish out of my shelf drawer and ‘opened my closet. I picked up the first shoe I saw and threw it up at the square-cut shape on the ceiling.
"Zero, come down here," I said.
I sat down on my bed and began painting my nails. Then, I felt a presence beside me. I looked up and saw Zero sitting right beside me. I jumped, surprised.
"Geez, give me a heart attack, won’t you?"
He chuckled.
I finished painting my nails, after putting a nail color drier on top of the blue polish.
"So, what time is it?" I asked.
He pulled his phone from his pocket, flipped it open, and replied, "Seven-thirty."
"Are you ready?" I asked.
"Mhm."
He pulled me onto his lap and pressed his lips to mine, gently. Then, he stood up, pushing me to stand with him.
"Come on, we better go," he said.
"Okay," I replied.
We went down the stairs and I glanced in the living room and saw Louis and my mom sitting on the loveseat, so I took Zero’s hand and pulled him with me as I darted out the door.
We went down the wooden stairs outside and down the driveway. I got into the passenger seat and Zero in the driver’s.
"So," Zero said, casually, as he pulled out of the driveway, "My parents want to come into town to help with Veronica."
"Really?" I asked. He nodded. "That’s nice of them."
"It’s not really that nice. I feel like they think I’m too weak and defenseless to fight off an eighteen year old girl that’s heartbroken."
"If I’m right about this, most teenage girls are more aggressive after being heartbroken."
"Ugh… I think I can still fight her off-and if she really does like me that much, she won’t be able to hurt me."
"I guess, but still… She could be mad at you for leaving her and hurt you. I don’t know what kind of person she is, so I wouldn’t know which way she would go," I replied.
"All I know right now is that she definitely, one-hundred percent, wants to hurt you because I chose you over her."
"And who knows why you did that," I joked.
Either he didn’t catch my sarcasm or he was playing along when he said, "I know-because you’re the most gorgeous and special girl in the world."
"Yeah, helmet-special," I replied, sarcastically, again.
"No. Special as in beautiful, funny, and smart all rolled into one girl that any man would be lucky to have."
A blush burned in my cheeks and my heart beat quickened. "One very, very small, short girl," I remarked, pessimistically.
He chuckled. "Personally, I think the shorter a girl is, the cuter they are."
"So, you think Stephanie is cuter than me?" I laughed.
He smiled. "Just take my optimistic-ness and turn it pessimistic, silly girl."
"That’s my personality," I said, smiling.
Then, he parked in the mall parking lot before I even realized where we were. He got out of the car and in a second, had closed his door, walked around to the other side of the car, and opened my door.
"Geez, you don’t waste a second do you?" I joked.
He chuckled. "The longer to see your beautiful face."
I looked away shyly and got out of the car and shut the door. Zero locked the car with a button on his keychain and then he stuffed the keys into his pocket.
"Come on," he said, taking my hand.
We walked inside the building and up a set of gray marble stairs and into the theater’s lobby.
There were more people there than I had ever seen in there before-probably because I hadn’t gone to the movies on a Friday night in a long, long time.
"Did you forget to mention some people that were going in the movies with us?" Zero asked.
"Um… Maybe… Why?"
"Because Rob, Aaron, Pat Varkatzas, and Makenzie are over there," he said pointing in the direction of the picture booth, "With Christine and Mia."
I laughed nervously. "Oh, yeah… I forgot to tell you after that big thing with Louis."
He sighed. "It’s okay I guess-as long as I don’t sit near Rob."
"I thought you said you didn’t hate him."
"I don’t. I also said that he wasn’t one of my favorite people in the world," he said.
"… Oh…"
We walked over to Christine and Mia and everyone else, not noticing our presence until I spoke up.
"Hey," I said.
Mia turned around and beamed. She wrapped her arms around me and gave me a tight squeeze. "Hi." I could hear a chime in her voice, seeing me actually hanging out for once not in school.
Rob violently stomped over behind me, hovering over her with an ominous expression.
"H-hi Rob…?" I said, trying to say something.
Rob had always been like a brother to me, but now he seemed like my worst enemy... And I had never ever wanted to think of him like that, but, at the time, he thought of Zero and me as his enemies. I had always loved Rob like a brother and we acted like we were as well. But now, though I procured my best friend from France, Zero, I had depleted Rob from my life.
He looked at me like any older brother would. It was an "are you out of your mind?" look and I had gotten used to it ever since Zero had come back into my life.
After deciding to watch an eerie movie on the dead attacking a small town in the countryside, what’s name I had forgotten, we all seated ourselves in the movie theater. I sat between Makenzie and Zero, beside Makenzie was Mia, then Christine. Beside Zero were Pat, who was Makenzie’s boyfriend, then Aaron, and Rob.
Halfway through the movie, Makenzie leaned to me and whispered, "Rose, I need your help…" sounding terrified and broken.
"Oh god, Makenzie, what’s wrong?" I asked, deeply concerned.
"Well… Pat and I have gotten really serious now, you know?"
"Yeah…?" I said, uncertain where she was traveling with it.
"Well, I swear we were… Safe, and I-I had to be sure…" she said, vaguely, though I understood what she was hinting towards.
"Oh no, Makenzie you don’t think you’re… Pregnant do you?" I asked, scared for my friend.
She let out a quiet broken sob of fear.
"Oh god, Makenzie… Did you… You know, check if you were?" I whispered.
"Yes," she said, half-crying.
"Oh my god… I-I don’t know what to say… Have you told anyone yet?"
"N-no…"
"Not even Pat?" I asked.
"No…"
"Why not? He is the father," I replied.
"I know, but I’m scared to… What do I say?"
"Just say, ‘Pat, I’m pregnant and its your kid’."
She sighed. "I guess that’s the only way to say it… But, what about my parents? What do I say to them?"
"Umm… ‘I love Pat so much, Mom, Dad, and I know this was probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, but I’m having his child’," I replied, pretending to watch the movie.
"Oh geez, I’m scared, Rosetta," she said.
"I know, I feel your pain, Makenzie, I feel it," I whispered.
****
I was silent as Zero and I got into his black Mercedes.
"What’s wrong?" Zero questioned, confused by my silence.
"Makenzie just told me something that I’m partially shocked about…" I stated, blankly, dazed.
"Can you tell me?" he asked.
"Only if you swear on your life not to tell a single soul."
"I swear," he said.
"Okay, she’s pregnant with Pat’s baby and I’m the only one she’s told," I blurted out.
"Whoa… She doesn’t seem like that type of girl…" he said, taken aback.
