A Baseball Bat is not a Home Security System

This article outlines alternatives in home protection.
Law enforcement agencies will tell you that if your neighborhood has experienced a series of burglaries it makes sense to take precautions against it happening to you. It’s not too difficult to do deter thieves at night if you keep porch lights on and install additional motion detector lights. Keeping entranceways and windows brightly lit and clear of shrubs and trees gives an intruder no place to hide.

During daylight hours when most people are at work, it’s a lot easier for burglars to slip around to the back of a house and force their way through a window or door unnoticed. About the only method there is to effectively stop them if nobody around catches them in the act is a burglar alarm. Take note that a baseball bat is not an effective home security system and the police will never recommend that you confront someone trying to break into your home.

In Dayton, Ohio there has been a recent string of burglaries in a certain area of the city where most folks have day jobs and leave for long periods during regular business hours. Many community members have returned home from work to find they were robbed. One very lucky resident came close to being another in a series of victims, but happened to be home sick when an attempted break-in took place.

One of the three intruders knocked on his door, but when he did not answer, the home owner said he heard the sound of the lower wooden panel on the back door being split open. Looking through a window, he saw one of the suspects waving a gun. Grabbing a baseball bat, he opened the door and chased them out. The police later picked up two people for questioning.

The home owner acted bravely on instinct but he is very lucky he did not have an interaction with the gun the intruders were carrying. A home security system would have triggered a burglar alarm the instant the suspects tampered with the door, alerting a monitoring center and the police that a burglary was in progress. This is a much safer way to deter burglars from breaking into your home.
