5 Pages or 50, It's All the Same to Me!
Whether you're writing five pages or fifty, it's all the same: easy if you know how, impossible if you don't!
When I first started college I did not believe myself to be a good writer, and this perception steered me toward the sciences. After three years as a Natural Resources major, I took an Art History class and changed my plan completely.
Suddenly I was faced with the task of writing 5-20 page research papers every term with no idea how. Regardless of what those Introduction to Composition courses might offer an incoming freshman, there was little in my prior education that gave me the confidence and know how I needed.
After many rough attempts at scoring the ultimate "A", I finally came up with a method for writing that worked every time. I spent the last two years of college working our the kinks, and when I arrived at graduate school, I knew how to get "As", and get them every time.
I got to be so good at researching and writing papers that in addition to language courses I could take four classes that required papers a term, and still get perfect grades! I actually scored a few A+s and to balance it all out, one A-.
Keep in mind that I did all that and was a graduate teaching fellow applying for grants, studying abroad, and training for a couple of marathons! Trust me, one of the major requirements of my system was that it save me time, make me more efficient (and a little less type A).
I needed to write in a way that was mobile: none of this business of chaining myself to a desk for the last month of every term, drinking too much coffee, building a bus-driver butt, and begrudging the increasingly beautiful weather.
I wanted to be able to write from anywhere and I could. I wanted to carry a small bag with few materials, and I did. I wanted to enjoy the time I had in the evening and on weekends so I traveled a lot. I wanted to be able to write well during the spare moments I had between classes so I that's how I wrote my thesis.
When you are in the thick of writing a thesis, a dissertation, or term papers and essay exams it can be hard to see the big picture for all your classes at once, and maintain awareness of that throughout your work.
I like that now I can teach people just how easy it is: you should only have to do the work once, it should come naturally and quickly, and not need much revision.
I think it's pretty incredible to realize that in less than two hours of private tutoring you can change the outcome of your entire degree?
